Controversial beauty queen Janina San Miguel defended the country's representative in the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant held yesterday, August 24, in Nassau, Bahamas.
Miss Venezuela, Stefania Fernandez, won the coveted crown while the Philippines' bet, Bianca Manalo, failed to advance to the semi-finals.
"Hindi ako nalulungkot kasi nakita ko ang ganda ng performance niya," Janina proudly said at the press conference of GMA-7's Celebrity Duets held at Annabel's restaurant on T. Morato Ave., Quezon City.
Janina said she witnessed Bianca's dedication and focus during the time she was preparing for the prestigious global pageant.
"Ginagawa niya yong best niya. Alam ninyo po kung bakit? Kasi siyempre minsan dumadalaw ako sa Binibini [head office], nakikita ko, siyempre... Ginawa talaga ni Bianca 'yong best niya. Hindi lang talaga destined siguro."
A former Binibining Pilipinas World titlist, Janina earned notoriety when she mumbled incoherently during the Binibining Pilipinas 2008 pageant's question and answer portion. Janina eventually relinquished her title along with the privilege to compete in an international pageant, citing health reasons and the death of her grandfather.
"Siyempre nanghihinayang," Janina replied when asked if she regretted giving up the throne and the right to represent the Philippines.
The 5'11" beauty queen continued: "Pero it's my destiny siguro. Hindi lang siguro talaga binibigay ni God na makapag-compete ako."
As for the issue linking her to business tycoon Tonyboy Cojuangco, Janina stressed, "Hindi naman po totoo. Siguro po may reporter dun na nakakita na may meeting with a beauty queen. Siyempre beauty queen kadalasan mga nali-link sa mga ganun [rich and influential men]. Ok lang po as long as wala akong ginagawang masama."
