With the entire country still reeling from the devastating effects of typhoon Ondoy, GMA-7 devoted their Sunday program shows last October 4 to the victims and heroes of the recent calamity that struck Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
To intensify the donation drive, musical variety show SOP and lifestyle talk show Mel & Joey promoted the telethon, where Kapuso talents volunteered to personally answer the queries and stories of prospect donors and victims, respectively.
Aside from the telethon, some segments were created to remind and assure our kababayans that they are not alone in facing their struggles.
At exactly 11:45 a.m., the Kapuso roster of talents assembled on one stage to show unity and strength in the midst of uncertainty and despair. Ogie Alcasid along with girlfriend Regine Velasquez sang GMA Kapuso Foundation's official Operation: Bayanihan theme song titled, "I Will Be."
"After the tragedy we need to encourage everyone to fight and move forward," Ogie told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) seriously. "Marami pa tayong dapat gawin pero kaya 'to. Filipinos naman are very resilient basta tulong-tulong tayo and magkakasama lahat, I'm sure we will overcome this problem."
MEL & JOEY LIVE. After SOP, the Kapuso stars helped in packing the relief goods, while others took turns in manning the telephone lines assigned to take the calls from victims and interested donors.
Some of the celebrities who participated in the telethon were Sunshine Dizon, Dennis Trillo, Jay-R, Maxine Magalona, Wendell Garcia, Glaiza de Castro, Chynna Ortaleza, Ricardo Cepeda, Emilio Garcia, Lloyd Samartino, Jan Nieto, among others.
Mel & Joey did a live telecast and coverage of the telethon drive, which was dubbed Ondoy Kapuso Hotline, and relief efforts of the stars. The episode "Sa Lupit ng Bagyo... Babangon Tayo!" was conceptualized to also highlight the heroic acts of celebrities and non-celebrities during and after the storm.
Sharing their traumatic Ondoy stories to hosts Joey de Leon and Mel Tiangco were Gladys Reyes, Maverick, and JM Reyes. Richard Gutierrez, lead star of the upcoming primetime series Full House, was also invited to talk about his typhoon experience.
GMA Network's charity campaign is still ongoing, and accepting relief and cash donations to help the Pinoys who were badly hit by the typhoon.
