ABS-CBN Foundation, led by its energetic Managing Director Gina Lopez, hopes to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of participants in a foot race this coming October 10, 2010.
Dubbed as the biggest fun run in the country, Run for Pasig River is gunning for 120,000 registered runners and hopes to beat the world record of 110,000 runners held by "Bay to the Breakers" (1998) in San Francisco, USA.
Last year, when the Pasig International Marathon was conducted, there were 23,000 participants, and it earned 30 million pesos to help in the rehabilitation of the esteros leading into Pasig River.
"If we hit the world record, we hit CNN, we hit BBC and then it would be much easier to get help from the politicians and businessmen about this project. This is your river. This is not my river. This is all our river. Everyone must run. Because at the end of the day, everyone benefits from it," Gina said.
Run for Pasig River gathers the expertise of the foremost race directors in the country that include Rio Dela Cruz, Thumby Remigio, and Eric Imperio. The three are known to organize the popular races in Metro Manila and out of town. Eric, acting as the overall organizer of the race, revealed that another race director, Rudy Biscocho, is pitching in some words for the group.
The race will be divided into four different categories.
There will be the 21K ceremonial run composed of soldiers and the police in a ceremonial formation run. The group will start their run at SM Marikina, Marcos Highway, and go all the way to SM Mall of Asia, Pasig City.
Coach Rio will be handling the 10K and 5K races, which will have different starting points.
The 10K will begin at the corner of Ayala and Makati Avenue in Makati City. Coach Rio expects about 15,000 runners in this group. The starting point for the 5K race will be a the CCP Complex. This category expects to have 50,000 runners.
Thumb Remigio will be handling the 3K category or what he terms the "masa" group where majority number of runners will be coming from.
"This race, you're not doing it for yourself. You're doing it for your country. You're going out there because you want to show yourself and be counted. That's the difference with this race. The mantra should be, 'I want to do this race because I want to do a personal run'," said Monchet Olives, Corporate Social Responsibility Head of ABS-CBN and executive committee member of the 10.10.10 Pasig Run.
Aside from the run, celebrities have joined in the rehabilitation of the Pasig River thru various efforts. Director Brillante Mendoza teamed up with other TV and movie stars in informercials. (CLICK to read STORY and GALLERY.)
