During the premiere of I Do last night, September 28, at SM Megamall, Enchong Dee looked dashing in his Rajo Laurel suit while Erich Gonzales was a vision in her light pink gown designed by Nat Manilag.
Enchong compares the premiere night to a commencement exercise. "Para siyang graduation...para kaming graduate ni Erich and everyone is happy for us."
When asked about their supposed rivalry with the tandem of Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson, Erich pointed out, "Wala naman pong issue. Nandito kami para pagbutihin ang trabaho namin. At the end of the day, trabaho lang naman po, e. Sila rin naman po, looking forward sa gagawin nilang movie."
Enchong agreed with his leading lady. "Nag VTR nga sina Kuya John Lloyd [Cruz] and nandun sina Kim and Gerald...we're very happy kasi nga magkakaibigan kami and we support each other kaya sobrang thankful kami sa isa't isa."
The actress believes that they have yet to prove themselves in the entertainment industry. "Nagsisimula pa lang kami. Marami pa kaming dapat pagdaanan. Kumbaga, wala pa po ito. Part pa lang ito."
For his part, Enchong is cautious about letting success get into his head. "Baka mapaso pag inisip namin na mainit na kami. Ngayon, same pa rin. Bukas balik kami sa Magkaribal. Sobrang thankful kami kasi kahit sa Magkaribal nandoon pa rin sila [fans]."
Members of the press curiously asked the two for the real score between them. "Lagi naman namin sinasabi ni Enchong na magkaibigan lang talaga kami," said Erich. "Pagdating sa trabaho, kung ano yung kailangan sa eksena, gagawin namin yun at kung ano yung natural, for example, boyfriend-girlfriend. Basta, we make sure na pag nag-roll na yung camera, ibang tao na po kami, yung character na namin."
Enchong reiterated that they both decided to put their lovelife aside in order to concentrate on their career. "Siguro it wouldn't be this successful if inuna namin ang feelings namin. Ang priority talaga namin ang trabaho namin."
BASED ON A TRUE STORY. Erich pointed out that I Do is based on real events that happened to a young woman who got pregnant when she was a fourth year college student. "True to life story naman po ang I Do. It can happen naman to anyone in real life."
According to Erich, she already met the woman whose lovelife became the basis of the movie.
In the movie, Erich brings life to the character of Yumi Punongbayan, a girl who had an unexpected pregnancy with her boyfriend Lance Tan (Enchong). Their wedding plans are always faced with obstacles, including the objections of his Filipino-Chinese family.
When asked what they both learned about marriage through this movie, Erich said, "Ang lesson lang, kung gusto mong magpakasal, just make sure na ang rason mo sa pagpapakasal ay dahil talagang mahal mo yung tao hindi dahil sa kung anumang dahilan."
The young matinee idol also realized that marriage can wait, especially since he is very busy with his career now. "We have to think what our priority really is."
The love-team partners feel pressured because I Do is considered to be their first mainstream movie, although they were paired together in the 2008 Cinema One Originals entry Paano Ko Sasabihin? "Yung response ng mga tao, kinakabahan po ako...we just pray po na suportahan ito," says Erich, who also portrayed a teenage mother in ABS-CBN's afternoon series Katorse.
The other cast members who were present at the premiere night were Pokwang, Melai Cantiveros, Janus del Prado, and Dennis Padilla.
Vice Ganda, Zanjoe Marudo and Rica Paras were among the guests who attended the cast party held at Chef's Quarter in SM Megamall right after the screening.
I Do is rated General Patronage by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board. The movie is directed by Veronica Velasco, the same director behind the acclaimed film Inang Yaya and the 2009 Cinemalaya Best Picture Last Supper No. 3.
