All praises for Manny Pangilinan on birthday fun run

Senior vice president for PLDT Human Resources Butch Jimenez shares that Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) loves to hear about the latest showbiz stories. The man in fact watches variety shows on local television during his lunch breaks.

MVP for the win!

On his 65th birthday, business magnate and sports aficionado Manny V. Pangilinan celebrated through a fun run.

The MVP Run was participated in by some 2, 500 runners who hit the Mall of Asia (MOA) grounds for a good cause on early Saturday morning, July 16.

It could only take an influential and much appreciated boss to drive giant corporations' leaders, television actors and actresses, the country's top athletes, and ordinary employees to rise early on a weekend.

But everything is possible, so it seems for MVP or the Bossing who heads the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), Smart Communications, Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), Maynilad Water Services Inc., Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, Medical Doctors Inc., and TV5, to mention only several of the companies he heads.

The best gift anyone could have given him was support for his foundations and a resounding one did he get. The event's proceeds will fund the PLDT-Smart Foundation, Marikina Watershed Schools, and the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF).

Spotted on the scene were the honchos: PLDT president Napoleon Nazareno, Smart Communications co-founder Orlando Vea, Maynilad President Ricky Vargas, Meralco chief operating officer Oscar Reyes, TV5 president Atty. Rey Espinosa, and PLDT-Digitel merger, also chief executive officer of JG Summit Holdings James Go.

Also up and about in the event that began as early as 5:00 in the morning were TV5 stars and personalities Ruffa Gutierrez, Paolo Bediones, Miriam Quiambao, Alex Gonzaga, Arci Munoz, Rainier Castillo, Carla Humphries, Ritz Asul, Jasmine Curtis Smith, JC De Vera, Danita Paner, IC Mendoza, Paolo Bediones, Cristy Fermin, Shalala, also Bagets cast Meg Imperial, Aki Torio, Nadine Lustre, Rico dela Paz, Schai Sigrist, and Joshua Padilla.

Patricia Bermudez-Hizon hosted the fun run, and later, the stage was preceeded by comedians Long Mejia, Empoy Marquez, and vocalist Kean Cipriano.

Fun run participants included professional athletes and teams such as the Philippine Basketball Association's (PBA) Talk n Text Tropang Texters and Meralco Bolts, Smart Gilas Pilipinas, PBA Dilig's recent champions North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) Road Warriors, NCAA's San Beda Red Lions; also present were the national teams for Taekwondo and Boxing.

The four-race event was categorized into a 3km Pet Run, a 5km Mardi Gras Run, a serious 10km race, and a 1.65km walk with the big boss himself.

MAGNANIMOUS MANNY. Known to be a sportsman, MVP's advocacy in life is to share "the feeling of winning"—something he imparted during the MVP Sports Foundation launch.

He now provides financial and logistical support to boxing, cycling, basketball, football, taekwondo, badminton, tennis and running sports associations, collectively known as the foundation Goal! Pilipinas.

To add to his winning feats, MVP also functions as the president of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and chairs the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP).

The MVP RUN is only a partial event of MVP's week long celebration, which included his visit to native town Apalit, Pampanga last July 14 (his exact birth date). There he will soon extend help in a waste-to-energy project.

Moreover, his birthday week witnessed the Project Center Court, a joint charity effort of PLDT Employees, which will aid the building of a basketball court and finance sports equipment to the children of Northville, Apalit.
