Anne Curtis is famous for her flawless red-carpet appearances.

This year, the actress-fashionista was a no-show at the fifth Star Magic Ball ball held at the Manila Peninsula Hotel on September 3.

Anne was on vacation in Europe with boyfriend Erwan Heussaff and the crowd that eagerly followed the stars on the red carpet was left wondering who would be the evening's best dressed.

When young actor Joseph Marco arrived at the venue with his date Jessy Mendiola, who was wearing a black gown, everyone thought, "Yeah, she looks pretty."

Jessy's looked fresh-faced with just a hint of red on her lips. Her makeup was done by artist Kusie Ho.

She wore a simple outfit — it had a demure Sabrina neckline and serpentina skirt — that did not even elicit a wow from onlookers.

But when she turned around for a solo photo, jaws dropped as she revealed the back of her dress — or lack of it.

She turned again to face the media for obligatory interviews.

"My dress is by Pepito Albert," she said, smiling.

Right there and then, she was on everyone's best-dressed list.

The actress, who became a household name when she headlined the series Sabel, said she wanted to wear something different from her usual casual outfits in pop neon colors.

She was the picture of elegance. She paired her satin gown with chunky gold earrings, also by Pepito Albert, and a Paua shell clutch by model-turned-designer Tina Maristela-Ocampo for her brand Celestina.

Jessy was overwhelmed when she was recognized with the breakout style award opposite her male counterpart Enrique Gil.
