"There's lots of things in store for this November issue," says Preview editor-in-chief Pauline Suaco-Juan in an exclusive chat with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on November 2.
Aside from this being Preview's thickest issue this year, with special sections like Preview Men and The 2011 Beauty Awards, the country's best-selling fashion magazine has one of the country's greatest actresses of all time on its cover—THE SUPERSTAR Nora Aunor.
Pauline tells details about how she and her team got hold of Nora for the shoot.
"Actually, we're very grateful to YES! magazine because the shoot for Preview was actually done on the coattails of their cover shoot."
In fact, the photos were shot on the same day as the controversial YES! October 2011 issue, where the superstar was seen smoking on the cover. (CLICK HERE to read related article.)
"So, after they shot for the YES! cover, Ate Guy was able to spare a couple of minutes [for us].
Pauline says the Preview shoot was done on the same day as the YES! shoot "because Liz [Uy]and Vince [Uy] were the stylist and art director for that particular shoot, so parang sinama na lang, 'siningit na lang yung shoot for Preview.
"Actually, ako personally, I feel really bitin kasi I would've wanted to see more pictures of Ate Guy.
"We have been trying to get another schedule with her to augment the pictures that are seen in this month's issue. Kaya lang, I think, nagkasakit siya, e.
"Na-ospital siya that time, so I guess mas naging hectic yung schedule niya, so hindi na kami nakakuha ng additional schedule to augment the photographs."
Despite that, however, things turned out well for the magazine.
The magazine's creative director Vince Uy—who ended up supervising the shoot with his sister Liz for both the YES! and PREVIEW shoots—recalls Nora's disposition on the day of the pictorial:
"Actually, she was more really quiet. I guess, in a sense, because she was shooting so many layouts already.
"But I recall she was just pleasant. She said it [clothes and concept] was something new. She said it was something she hadn't really tried.
"I had a feeling that she enjoyed because we were supposed to do just one layout [for Preview], and then it turned out we were able to shoot three!
"So, I guess, she was having fun playing dress up."
Nora's look in the magazine is more polished and sophisticated compared to her usual dusky outfits.
She wears neatly brushed up hair, brown makeup, and nude-colored dresses on the shoot.
"We wanted to see a different side of Nora and we wanted a trend-based [pictorial]," explains Pauline.
"Because we are a fashion magazine, we wanted to see her in trendy outfits.
"So the theme for her shoot was nude, which plays across all age brackets and body types.
"We figured it would be a good trend for her to try because some trends could get parang masyadong bata, 'di ba?
"Unlike this trend, it's not discriminating."
Liz Uy, who styled the Superstar for the shoot, chose a ruffled Joel Escober dress for the cover photo.
The ruffles, as Pauline says "gives a textural dimension and gives softness also to the way Ate Guy is portrayed."
She notes how Nora Aunor's fame became the biggest deciding factor on why they chose her to be on their cover.
"Nora Aunor is the Superstar.
"She's a legend.
"She's part of Philippine popular culture.
"She's part of Philippine history.
"The contribution she's made to Philippine cinema is monumental.
"Her homecoming sparks excitement in the industry because she's still one of the best actresses of all time that we've had."
Preview magazine with superstar Nora Aunor on the cover is out on newsstands this month.
