DJ Joe D' Mango says technology has changed the way people write letters.
When he started working in radio over two decades ago, the founders of Twitter and Facebook hadn't even been born.
Joe says, "We have to keep up with technology. [Twitter and Facebook] na ang means ng pagpapadala ng [messages].
"Before I left Love Notes (a popular FM radio program in the '90s), e-mail pa lang."
Before Internet, Joe would get hundreds and thousands of letters sent via the post office or snail mail.
"Mas maganda ngayon kasi mas mabilis [na] magpadala [ng sulat]," he observes.
"Communicating has also become more convenient."
Joe is back with a new program titled, Joe D' Mango Love Notes, aired on dzMM Teleradyo, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 12 midnight to 4 a.m.
NEW SEGMENT. He talks about an interesting segment on the show.
"Magbabasa [kami] ng mga padala ng tao [including tweets]. Ang galing nga ng tao, napagkakasya nila [ang message nila] sa 140 characters."
We point out that it's 160 characters.
He smiles and adds, "May skill nga sila."
How has he managed to stay this long in an industry that is always on the lookout for the next best thing?
"Do what you love, and do it in all sincerity...Just put your heart into it and be sincere."
One thing he loves about his profession of giving advice on the radio is that it gives him the opportunity "para tumulong."
"I took the chance. I felt I have something God has given me—the talent to share my thoughts on love and relationships and people have listened and continue to listen."
How does he plan to dominate the midnight to 4:00 a.m. slot?
Joe says "One of the key strengths of the program is being innovative.
"[Listeners] can be part of it. We want to be interactive, we want to talk to you and hear what you have to say.
"So if someone has an experience, share it with us."
This interactivity "allows listeners to feel as if they're part of the show, wherever they are."
His selling point as Joe D' Mango is that through the years, he has made listeners and callers feel good about themselves—no matter what situation they're in.
Unlike other late night DJs and love-advice givers, Joe doesn't poke fun at your situation.
Love Notes also uses Skype. Callers can interface with Joe—in real time—and see themselves on Teleradyo and the Internet via live streaming.
JOE GETS PERSONAL. He opens up and talks about his own experience in the love department.
"Gusto ko itong i-share, not because I'm [an expert] in this field but because I'm not exempted from [love] problems. There was a time...
"Muntik na kami maghiwalay ng wife ko.
"I always say on air that if you love someone, set them free. If she comes back, she's yours and if she doesn't come back, she was never yours [to keep].
"Ang daling sabihin," he said because one day he found himself faced with the same predicament.
"We were in the middle of a very huge fight. Sabi niya. 'I want freedom!'
"Imagine your partner asking you for freedom. Not just your partner, your wife!
"Doon ko na-realize, kapag mahal mo talaga ang isang tao, you should let the person go and that's what I did."
Joe D' Mango followed his own advice.
"Now [our relationship is] stronger. We're so much more in love...we're celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary."
