Curiosity brought Danica Magpantay to the modeling industry.
She is hailed as the first Filipina to become Ford Supermodel of the World.
The 19-year-old did not really intend to follow the footsteps of her mother, popular makeup artist and former supermodel Lala Flores.
When she joined the Ford modelling contest, she just wanted to know how it feels like to be in the competition.
"Tinitingnan ko sila, sabi ko, 'Ano kaya ang feeling nila?'
"Being part of the industry, nananalo sila ng 19 pa lang. Iniisip ko talaga, 'Ano kaya ang feeling nila?'" Danica told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other selected media at the pocket press conference for her latest Globe Tattoo @ Home endorsement.
When her name was called out as winner of the Ford Supermodel of the World, Danica was "masaya, pero blank."
It also took a while for the young Pinay model to inform her mom about her achievement because she didn't know what to say.
Danica narrated, "I called her afterwards. Nag-lunch kami with the past Ford [winners]. Tumawag ako, sasabihin ko na dapat na nanalo ako, pero ang sinabi ko, 'Can you call?'
"Tumawag sila, e, mabiro talaga ako, sinabi ko, 'Mommy, I got a place.'
"My mom was parang, 'What place?'
"Naisip ko talaga na, 'Ay, disappointed pa sila na place lang ang sinabi ko.'
"Sabi ko, 'Winner, mommy.'
"[Sabi ni mommy], 'Huwag kang magbibiro ng ganyan, hindi maganda ang ganyang biro.'
Danica did not only make Filipinos proud, she also brought happiness to her family, especially her mother.
"She's really happy. Wala namang nag-expect sa amin na ito ang ibibigay talaga ni God," she said.
"Kasi, if you ask me to do modelling talaga, hindi talaga. Alam mo 'yong try-try lang, petiks lang na aral-model, chill ka lang."
So, when she won, Danica thought, "I'm really thankful na God made this happen."
STOPPING SCHOOL FOR A WHILE. Danica was a first-year Fine Arts student at UP Diliman when she joined the local Ford Supermodel contest and won the title in 2010.
Danica said she was doing well during her first semester. However, she took a break from school to give her new-found career a shot.
"Actually, I'm more happy na," said Danica. "Hindi naman masaya ako na nag-stop ako ng school. Masaya ako na ganito ang naging path ko."
She is determined to finish her studies and has yet to decide if she will continue Fine Arts or find another course that will make use of her creativity.
She related, "Kasi, now that I look at it, when I go back to school, parang mas may drive ako to do well.
"Basta hindi na lang siya na para lang sa akin, para lang matapos ko siya. I know when I go back to school, I will strive harder and mas mag-a-achieve ako ng better grades.
"I was doing pretty well naman, pero ngayon, mas gusto ko na mas maganda ang makukuha ko."
KEEPING HER VALUES. Winning the Ford Supermodel of the World title requires Danica to stay in New York for various modelling engagements.
The young Pinay admits that New York is a big city and she'll get to meet different people during her stay.
But she assures us that she'll never forget the values her parents taught her.
"I've always been family-oriented," said Danica. "I don't really go out at night. Maraming beses na akong niyaya. I will still go out but I know naman my limits.
"The only time you'll get into [trouble] is kung ilalagay mo ang sarili mo sa [compromising] position na 'yon.
"Kasi, kahit nandoon ka naman pero hindi mo wine-welcome or ine-entertain 'yong thought, you will never do it."
She also related, "I go out with my friends.
"May mga nag-i-smoke, may mga umiinom, pero sa akin, I don't have to do that.
"They're my friends but I don't have to do the same things. I just join them."
Danica also doubted that she would be influenced easily by the people around her.
"I've been raised well by my parents talaga," she reiterated. "They made sure [I am God-fearing].
"Talagang bata pa lang ako, we'd go to church.
"Then, eventually, hindi lang 'yong parents ko 'yong reason kung bakit ako nagchu-church.
"Ako na rin kasi parang si God nasa heart ko na."
AFTER MODELLING. Danica knows that being a model is not forever. So, there are times when she thinks about what she's going to do after modelling.
Danica may have learned this from her idol, model Tyra Banks.
"She knew when to stop. That's important, e," she said.
"Modeling is not forever.
"We applaud people who are models right now. But I think it's important that you know the next step."
While she is open to joining show business and becoming a TV host like Tyra, Danica wants to open a retail store someday.
"I wanna [start] my own business.
"Ayaw ko ng modelling forever, ang hirap kasi, e," she said.
But for now, Danica said, she will give modelling her best.
"I'll focus on my modelling po. Kasi, while you're here, why not give it your best shot," she said.
"'Tapos afterwards, whatever God wants me to be... I'm gonna enjoy it."
