Did you know that Will Devaughn loves music “more than movies?” The model-actor has also been into poetry and songwriting lately.

In an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on June 11 at GMA Network’s Studio 7, the model turned actor revealed that he’s into painting and songwriting these days.

“I paint and I write, but I don’t really show my writings to a lot of people so much,” he said.

It was in 2011 when the Faithfully star decided to try painting.

“Sometimes kasi, you have to try things in order to love them. If you don’t try something, you’ll never know if you really love anything.

“So, I decided to try to paint. I bought all the equipment and the brushes, sat down, and thought, ‘Ano ba talaga gusto ko i-paint?’

“Nothing popped into my head, so sabi ko, ‘Sige, I’ll just paint whatever my mind shows me.’

“And I started filling the canvass and iyon, that painting is now actually on my wall today, in my condo.”

His first work is a shadow image of a woman, with distinct bright red lips, set amidst a royal blue background.

We asked: "Could that be his ideal woman?"

“Hindi naman ideal, but I guess we do paint things that register on our own minds. I just thought it would be a beautiful picture of a woman, to be honest.

“The red lipstick just enhances the picture. It really comes out of it and I found it to be very beautiful.

“I’ve shown it to my friends at nagulat din sila, like, ‘You painted this? It’s beautiful!’

“Everyone I’ve shown it to have said it’s beautiful so I’m happy with it.”

Asked what he usually paints, Will answered, “Honestly, I don’t think of anything when I paint.

“I just let my hand go with the flow, mind whatever color or whatever design I choose.

“It’s like painting by intuition so that your hands and mind work together. And it usually comes out really nice.”

Other things that keep Will preoccupied during his free time are listening to music and songwriting.

“Singing and songwriting had always been a hobby of mine, but not many people know that.

“Actually, all of my friends would say the same thing, ‘We didn’t know you can sing,’ because I was very shy before, and it's now only I am starting to come out of the shell for the second time.

“Kumbaga, I have a first shell that cracked open and I didn’t know I had another one pa pala inside that needed to be cracked and needed to be revealed.

“I think we all have our own gift that we don’t really know at times.

“I know I have talent. I’ve just been afraid to go and let it loose.

“I guess it’s because of my upbringing that I wasn’t really that free.

“But within this past year, I learned a lot and God has taught me a lot, to be honest.

“And now I’m more excited for my life, unlike ever before.”

As for his taste in music, Will's choices are pretty diverse.

“Sa totoo lang, lahat [pinapakinggan ko]— from pop music to hip hop to reggae to house to trance to techno.”

He added, “Dance music also. That’s the big thing now.”

He looks up to a lot of musicians and artists, including Marvin Gay, James Brown, Michael Jacskon, Usher, and Chris Brown; and bands like Coldplay, Foo Fighters, and Smashing Pumpkins.

“Even Metallica, I like,” he added.

Among the female musicians, he picks Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

“Sila pa rin. I like their type of music,” he said.

He added some indie acts like Florence + The Machines and Sarah Bareilles to his list, “Ang ganda ng music nila. Sarah is a musical genius. I appreciate music more than anyone knows."

Will remarked, "Actually, I appreciate music more than movies.

“Sometimes I find myself always searching for the next music artists that no one knows about.”

If given the chance to turn this hobby into a professional recording career, Will would create danceable hip hop tunes similar to those of Chris Brown and Usher's.

“Or maybe even a Jason Mraz type of music. His song that I’ve been practising a lot lately is ‘I Won’t Give Up.’

“He’s such a lyrical genius. I look up to him so much and I would like to capture some of that, the essence of his lyrics.

“I [also like] more of the upbeat type of songs, type of music. That’s what I would like [to do]."

But for now, he needs to find the will to do it.

Smiling, the Kapuso actor said, “If I’m not the one to sing, I would like to be behind the music... of making it.

“I’ve always known that I wanted to do something with music but I’ve never really pushed myself to pursue it.”
