Norwegian singer-songwriter Per Sorensen returns to the Philippines to perform as opening act for European band Tears For Fears, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum today and tomorrow, August 10 and 11.
In a press conference, held August 6, at the Universal Records Tower in Quezon City, the former Fra Lippo Lippi vocalist expressed his excitement at seeing his Filipino fans again.
He has been to the country a couple of times—the first being in 1988 for a concert at the Folk Arts Theater together with his band—but Per is still amazed by the Filipino public's appreciation for his music.
"I think it's great," he said, when asked how he feels about the seemingly unending support of his Filipino fans.
"I think Filipinos are some of the most musical populations in the world. Everybody here loves to sing!
"When I ask them to sing along with me at a concert, they would gladly do it and that is a wonderful thing," he says.
For this upcoming performance, Per is showcasing some new tunes from his new solo album Master of Imperfection.
He said that he wrote all the songs in this album while he was confined in a mental institution.
He admitted he suffered from depression earlier this year.
"Sometimes people go through [events] in life and we fall into a sad, depressed state.
"And that's where we realize that nothing in this world is perfect. None of us is perfect," hence the title Master of Imperfection.
Per says he never would have gotten out of his state if not for the love and support of his family.
That is why for the upcoming show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Per is set to perform with his older son, Oscar, signifying his closeness to his children.
"He's always loved the music of Fra Lippo Lippi since he was young. He would play our songs in the keyboard when he was about three.
"He will be joining me on the show on August 10 and 11.
"I will be on the other side of the stage playing the keyboard, the piano melodies, and he will be on the other side playing the synth [synthesizer] parts."
Per willl be performing his current single "Loneliness" and other new tracks from his album, including his own version of James Taylor's "Fire And Rain."
Of course, he will also be playing some songs of Fra Lippo Lippi.
"In 1986, I wrote the song 'Beauty And Madness' with lyricist Rune Kristoffersen for the upcoming Fra Lippo Lippi album Light And Shade (1987).
"You're either too young to remember or too old, for that matter.
"Anyway, I love that song so I re-recorded it for this album. I hope you like it too," he said via press statement for the album's release.
Expect that Per will sing this track along with other Fra Lippo Lippi such as "Later."
As a parting question for Per, PEP (Philippine EnterainmentPortal) asked: What song will he dedicate to his Filipino fans?
"Probably 'Everytime I See You' or 'Beauty And Madness.'"
