Marion Aunor was allowed to interpret her own compositon in the Himig Handog competition. She explains, "Parang talagang kasal na kasal daw yung boses ko sa song. So they thought it would be best if I was the one who interpreted it."

Marion Aunor is one of the twelve finalists of this year’s Himig Handog Pinoy Pop Love Songs songwriting competition.

She is the niece of the Superstar Nora Aunor and the daughter of former actress Lala Aunor.

Her composition “If You Ever Change Your Mind” was chosen from out of 25, 000 entries to become part of the top 12.

While 10 other entries were interpreted by Kapamilya singers Aiza Seguerra, Yeng Constantino, and Daniel Padilla, Marion interpreted her own song.

She explains, “Uhm, well, you know, I know that it was supposed to be KZ and another X-Factor contestant, I can’t remember her name right now.

“But then, Star Record also told me that they would allow me to record my own song 'cause they realized that, you know, my song is really dependent on my voice.

“Parang talagang kasal na kasal daw yung boses ko sa song. So they thought it would be best if I was the one who interpreted it.”

Marion imparts how it feels to be part of the Himig Handog finalists.

She says, “Actually, it’s more like nervous and excited at the same time. You know, I’m really pleased to know that I’m part of the 12.

“And at the same time, since I’m interpreting my own song and the rest of the interpreters are big time artists, you know, there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that.

“But then again, since I’ve been receiving that feedback on the Youtube lyric video that they posted, you know, I’ve been bordering more on excited.”

The song’s lyric video now has over 80, 000 hits on YouTube.

INSPIRATION. Marion narrated how the song came about. “Actually, it started when my friend Carlene gave me advice about the past relationship that I had.

“And that’s where I got the line, ‘I needed someone who would love me more than he loved himself.’ She actually told me that.

“And you know, it stuck with me and then time passed, and I was like, sayang naman kung hindi ko sinabi na kanta yung past relationship na yun.

“So I remembered what she told me and then I built a song around that.”

SINGING CAREER. Does being Nora Aunor’s niece influence her to join Himig Handog and become a singer?

Marion says, “Uhm, well, honestly, I didn’t really think much about it.

“But then, you know, knowing she’s also a singer and my mom, as well, since everyone in my family is musically-inclined, you know, it’s really pushed me.

“And you know, it makes me think maybe this is meant to happen. Maybe I’m supposed to enter into, you know, the music industry.”

Do you see yourself singing with Nora?

She answers, “Uhm, that I’m not sure of 'cause my music is completely different from hers. But it would be a great honor to have that.”

Marion says she hasn’t seen her aunt for a while as the Superstar has a very busy schedule.

Given the age gap, she also confessed, “We’re actually not very close, you know. It’s more of my mom who gets to hang out with her a lot.”

Does she really intend to pursue a career in showbiz?

Her reply, “I guess so, but right now, I’m focusing on being able to share my music. I don’t know if I’m gonna get into other, you know, branches of showbiz.”

In terms of acting Marion says, “Honestly, I’m not very good at acting. I mean, as you can see in the music video, like that’s the best I can do already.

“So maybe after lots and lots and lots of training then maybe, I might, you know, consider acting.”

Showbiz crush. “Crush? I don’t know, I don’t really think about it that much. And I’m more of like, for foreign [actors].”

Favorite local actor. “I don’t know, I have a girl crush on Anne Curtis 'cause she’s really hot. And then for guys…I don’t know, I don’t think about the guys that much.

Musical influences. “Uhm, well actually, a lot of people are comparing me to Norah Jones right now.

“I guess there’s a little bit of her and actually, Jason Mraz. That’s where I try to develop the yodel in my song.”
