Valerie Weigmann on her preparation before the camera begins rolling: “Anytime nasa isip… kapag ka may bago akong script, I try to focus on it. I try to study it as soon as I get it para at least prepared na ako sa set, para mas confident, para mas maramdaman ko rin ang role ko, I mean, ang character ko…”

Pretty ladies who stand 5 feet 9 inches tall usually get asked, “Don’t you want to become a beauty queen”?

But joining a pageant is the furthest thing from Valerie Weigmann’s mind.

At the pocket press conference of TV5’s Kidlat held last February 19, she told (Philippine Entertainment Portal), “Ako naman, sa tingin ko, wala as of now.

"Tignan ko sa future, hindi ba. Baka mag-decide pa rin ako.”

This 23-year-old Filipina-German beauty is not exactly new in the business.

Aside from being a familiar face on the runway, she’s done a couple of TV commercials— most notable of which was for a toothpaste brand.

In 2008, she was introduced as “crush ng bayan” in Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus!

But her role in the Kapatid network’s series is by far her “best opportunity.”

Valerie related her gradual crossover from modeling to acting, “Ako naman, since I did a lot of commercials and everything, very close [sa acting].

“Halos parehas rin naman kasi may mga acting portions din, di ba. So, na-enjoy ko. Dun ko ata na-discover na mahilig din akong umarte kahit papa’no.”

She has this distinct accent, but the model doesn’t want to dwell on any obstacle.

“I wanted to learn more about the craft so nagwo-workshop din ako since this opportunity with Kidlat came up, and the production told me about it and everything… yun, dun ako nag-decide.

“Why not try kasi andito na ang opportunity? Sayang din naman kapag mag-no-no pa ako, di ba. Baka walang ibang opportunity sa akin.”

How about her height? Isn’t it hard to find a partner for a tall lady?

Her reply: “Hindi naman… Yeah, depende. Pero most of the guys naman are pretty tall as well. Hindi naman lahat, hanggang dito lang [showing the level of her forehead].

“Saka especially, naka-heels kasi ako ngayon, e, kaya tumangkad ako.

“Kapag may shoot naman, most of the time, naka-flats ako para at least same height.”

HER ROLE. Valerie will play the role of Natasha, whom she described as “mysterious.”

“She grew up in South Africa sa isang mayamang pamilya so, she’s really cold. Saka ayaw niya na marami siyang friends since she likes to stay alone most of the time.

“Most of the time nasa isip niya lang yung isang misyon na kelangan niya tapusin.”

As a kontrabida, how does she plan to make the Kidlat fans hate her?

“Siyempre kapag nasa set ako, talagang nasa isip ko lagi, iba na ako. I’m Natasha. Para mas prepared ako kapag may eksena na ako, para mas planned na.

“Kasi mahirap din kapag nasa isip ko na, sige, nandito na ako sa set…I’m still Valerie, di ba.

“Ako naman, I try to be already Natasha, her character, kasi iyan ang pinaka-nagwo-work para sa akin.”

Does she have a peg?

“Actually meron… It’s a mix of Catwoman sa Dark Knight at saka Uma Thurman, more on Poison Ivy, a bit. So mixed.”

Unlike most newbies who aspire for lead roles, Valerie eyes the opposite.

“More kontrabida roles,” she answered when asked about her dream projects.

She’d also welcome “mabait na roles” because “gusto kong ma-experience lahat, I want to be versatile, hindi lang parang isang role lang.”

Given the chance, part of her wish list is to work with Kapamilya leading man Piolo Pascual.

But she underlined that she's also more than too happy about her project at present.

“One of the best, si Derek, di ba. I mean he’s like one of the best actors right now. For me, it’s one of the biggest achievements actually and one of the best opportunities to start. So masaya naman ako sa role ko na yun.”

We noticed her resemblance to Rhian Ramos and Georgina Wilson.

She smiled, “I get that a lot…”

But now that her career is ready for takeoff, she prefers to be known as “just Valerie Weigmann.”
