Apart from the thrilling plot, another major element which makes Pretty Little Liars a huge hit for teenage girls is the trendy outfits the lead characters sport.
The American teen-drama/mystery-thriller TV series' four main characters— Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hannah Marin, and Emily Fields— have their own distinct look and unique fashion style.
In an interview last February 26, Troian Bellisario relates how much of her character Spencer she dresses up like in real life.
She recalls, “Yeah, it’s actually funny. Mandi Line, the costume designer for our show just released in an interview that I, along with Chad Lowe, are one of the most difficult people to dress.”
Emmy award-winning actor Chad Lowe plays Byron Montgomery, Aria’s dad, in the TV series.
“And you know, she’s like, I meant it as a compliment! I was like, ‘You’re on it, lady!’” Troian said in jest.
She continues, “Spencer and I are very similar in that, I love Spencer’s clothing. She’s very... like, classic American line: the blazers, the blouses...
“She’s kind of like Ralph Lauren in that way. But I don’t really dress up as much as Spencer does.
“So, I think I’m a much more casual kind of ripped stockings and a punk T-shirt type.
“But you know, I like to be comfortable and Spencer’s clothes are definitely not comfortable.
“But I do love the style. But the good thing about Mandi Line and why she said I was difficult to dress is because she does really value my opinion and she does allow me to say, you know, I like this about this outfit, I don’t like this, can we change this.
“So she’s really cool in that we work together for a long time to build Spencer’s outfits.”
If you would be given the chance to wear the wardrobe of any of the other girls, whose would it be?
Troian replied, “Well, I used to always say Aria because I really like a lot of Goth kind of, darker stuff.
“But actually, most recently, Emily’s been getting the best stuff. ‘Cause she’s been getting really, like a lot of All Saints, a lot of like cool leather jackets and like, sneakers... spikes.
“So, I’ve kind of been into Emily’s style for a while.”
