On April 16, hundreds of thousands around the world, including Filipinos, spent their entire day without wearing shoes for one simple reason: so that impoverished children wouldn’t have to.
The annual event dubbed as One Day Without Shoes is a project of international shoe brand TOMS, which aims to spread awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life.
For one day, an hour or even just a few minutes, the brand encourages anyone to go barefoot or go about what they normally do but without shoes.
Last year over 4,000 events were held in more than 50 countries through the world and this year, the brand’s Philippine arm in partnership with Alabang Town Center hosted a barefoot walk around and outside the mall premises.
Brand ambassador Paola Abrera led the campaign that has influenced several TV personalities, including ABS-CBN reporter Ginger Conejero, who shot an episode of her ANC show Mornings@ANC without having footwear on.
“This is day is not just about shoes, it’s about health, education, self esteem and hope for a better future.
“It starts with a single person, a simple act and continues with a child in need being acknowledged and ultimately, helped,” says the brand’s representatives.
This weekend the Alabang Town Center mall will be holding another event called Style Your Sole, wherein every purchase of TOMS shoes would guarantee a child in need with his/her own pair of footwear.
