They say that tragedy brings people closer together.
Could that have been the case for Jake Vargas and Bea Binene, who both recently admitted that they’ve been dating for more than a year now?
Over the past year, the Kapuso teen stars have gone through a slew of intrigues and negative issues.
In September 2012, Jake’s brother, Joseph, filed a complaint against several Philippine National Police (PNP) officers, whom he claimed had kidnapped him and his wife for ransom.
He was also reported “missing” sometime in June, which he later on clarified as a mere “cooling off” episode after he had a petty fight with Bea.
Around October also last year, Bea also got involved in a “legal battle” between her mother Carina Binene, radio DJ Papa Dan, and Atty. Ferdinand Topacio.
In tough times, people find comfort in the arms of a friend. And for Bea and Jake, it is their bond as a young couple that has made them and continues to make them stronger.
SECRET RELATIONSHIP. In a recent interview with PEP, (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Bea admitted that it was a mutual decision between her and Jake to keep the relationship a secret.
They officially became a couple on February 5, 2012, a day before their now defunct show Alice Bungisngis and Her Wonder Walis aired on GMA-7.
Bea says it was Jake’s caring nature and gentlemanly ways that made her fall for him.
"Si Jhake po, mabait. Wala po akong maipipintas sa kanya. He's a very great guy. Sobrang bait niya...” she said in a 2011 interview—around the time when Jake, still known then as Jhake Vargas, admitted to Bea that he had a crush on her.
Although many had suspected that an off-screen affair was already blossoming between them, Jake and Bea had managed to keep the courtship under wraps and only revealed their secret love after it was mentioned in public by Jake’s manager, German Moreno, very recently.
Jake says, “Nagulat lang, pero ready naman ako kasi alam ko naman na sasabihin niya talaga, e.”
SUPPORTIVE PARTNERS. Young as they may be—Jake, now 20, and Bea 15—the couple seems destined for the long haul, judging by how supportive they are of each other.
They have spent nearly four years working together in various projects like Pepito Manaloto, Pahiram Ng Isang Ina, Reel Love Presents: Tween Hearts, and the movie Tween Academy: Class of 2012.
In all those times, Jake and Bea have developed a kind of relationship that involves genuine concern and affection for one another.
In the heat of Bea’s issue last year, Jake had publicly kept his distance. But behind the prying eyes of the media, he had become his girlfriend’s confidante.
Meanwhile, Bea has been keeping Jake grounded, and has taken on the task of reminding him about his priorities.
Jake and Bea will continue to appear in Pepito Manaloto and Sunday All-Stars, after Home Sweet Home ends its run this month.
