Nyjah Huston (top photo), named as ESPN’s Action Sports Athlete of the Year last July 14, has been skateboarding for 15 years now since he was four years old.

Filipino X-games fans are definitely in for a treat because world-renowned skateboarding athletes arrived for a one-day-only fan event, the DC South East Asia Tour 2013.

The highlight of this year’s tour is Nyjah Huston, who recently won ESPN’s Action Sports Athlete of the Year award.

Wes Kremer, Matt Miller, Cyril Jackson, Tommy Fynn and Jake Hayes also joined Nyjah for the skateboard exhibition tour.

Their Filipino fans are lucky to be the first to see them do their death-defying stunts and skateboard tricks today, September 1, 3:00 p.m. at SM Mall of Asia.

An in-store fan signing event before the exhibition happened earlier at 1:00 p.m.

“We’re so stoked for DC to bring the world’s best skaters to Asia’s best capital cities,” said Sammy Gosling, Marketing Executive of DC Shoes South East Asia, during the launch of their event held at 7th High Superclub in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

In an interview, Sammy explained that this is a golden opportunity for extreme sports fans to meet the skate team and witness their stunts live now that the sport is gaining popularity in South East Asia.

The Marketing Executive said, “Skateboarding in South East Asia is taking off and the skate community is becoming increasingly global due to social media.

“The local skate communities follow the global athletes, such as Nyjah Huston, online so it is great for them to get an opportunity to mingle with them in the flesh.

“By continuing to invest in the development of skateboarding in the region we hope to see a skater from South East Asia rise to the top of the world’s skateboard rankings in the future.”

Wes Kremer from San Diego, California was excited to see his fans at their skate exhibition.

When asked about his message for his Filipino fans, the 23-year-old skateboarder said, “I love you! Thank you so much!”

During the launch, 25-year-old Tommy Fynn could not hide his excitement over the skate exhibition, “I’m really excited. It’s good to be here are the people are really nice.

Tommy might not be a pro yet, but experience makes him one to look out for.

21-year-old Aussie Jake Hayes shared that his favorite skate boarding trick is called the “wheelchair,” which he will do during their exhibition.

Cyril Jackson said he likes all skateboard tricks. However, the 23-year-old teased everyone about the special trick he will do during their exhibition game, which is his favorite.

Nyjah Huston might be the youngest among the group, but this 19-year-old has been skate boarding since the age of four.

At the launch, Nyjah shared that it’s his first time to visit the country and that’s he’s thankful for the warm welcome his Filipino fans gave him and the other athletes.

Nyjah said with pleasure, “I wanna say you guys rule! And thanks to warm support. I really appreciate it.”

Their fans would get to see something unique from their visit to each of the countries.

For the Manila leg of their skate tour, a custom made skate park has been made at the SM Mall of Asia.

After Manila, the team will be visiting Somerset Skatepark in Singapore on September 7 and Green Skatepark in Jakarta, Indonesia on September 8.

Celebrities spotted at last night’s launch party include Will Devaughn, Roxanne Barcelo, Sam Pinto, Guji Lorenzana, and Jon Avila.

The DC South East Asia Skate Tour-Philippines is made possible by SM Mall of Asia, Hyatt Regency Hotel Manila, Clavel Magazine, Speed Magazine, Status Magazine, Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin and The Philippine Star.
