Former beauty queen Nina Ricci Alagao is the picture of a happy wife and mother.
Her secret? You have to feel good about yourself.
“Self-esteem is very important, especially if you’re a mother because it’s a sacrificial thing to be a mother, and you have to make more time for your children,” she said.
The actress and makeup artist appeared at the press launch of Baby & Family Expo 2013, on October 24, at the Fun Ranch activity center in Tiendesitas, Pasig.
Nina hosted the brief program on the upcoming expo on December 6 to 8, where she will give a talk on how moms can stay looking good and beautiful while taking care of the family.
She believes it is important for mothers never to forget about personal beauty.
“We really have to take the time and intentionally stay beautiful, so that you’ll serve as inspiration to other people, even to single women.
"So that when they do become mothers, they will know that staying beautiful is not impossible just because you’re a mom.”
A MOM OF THREE BOYS. Nina's confidence as a mother today stems from her longtime dream of having her own family.
But having three boys wasn’t part of her original plan. However, when it happened, she welcomed each child with the greatest of joy.
“They’re [aged] 10, 6, and 2 now. All of them normally delivered, all of them boys.
“It’s such a joy, although it’s very difficult. It’s a lot of sacrifice, but then, so are all successful things, di ba?
“Ang hirap maging maganda if you have to raise three boys because they’re super malikot on different levels.
"The adjustment is quite drastic, but you’re able to do it because you want to.”
Her secret to staying sane and beautiful: “Siguro, always stay positive, and siyempre trust God na whatever you’re given, you’ll be provided everything that you’ll be needing under the circumstance.
“I believe there’s a reason I have three boys.”
HUSBAND'S SUPPORT. Nina is also grateful to her husband Michael Flores for going through it all with her.
She summoned fathers out there: “Be involved.”
She stressed the importance for fathers not only to be good providers, but also to become present in most family activities:
“They have to take part in that—in as little as changing nappies, bathing their children or just being with them when the mom is away—kasi they have to understand na it’s a shared responsibility.
“Parenthood is not easy, but when shared between the mother and the father, it’s a bit lighter.”
NINA'S CAREERS. With her husband’s help and support, Nina is able to manage side by side her family life and her three professions as a television actress, makeup artist, and painter. She said:
“I’ve somehow managed e. Parang lahat sila top priority.
"Kumbaga, iyong family, top priority yan. Next to that is my painting career, my tv career.
"Pero kasi lahat noon subordinate lang nung top priority mo, which is to raise a good family, good children.
“I’ve always wanted to paint when I was single, but it’s when I’ve began to have a family that I gained this discipline, na I can paint because I really, really want to make it a priority.”
At the moment, Nina is preparing to set up her first painting exhibition.
“Watch out for my art exhibit. It’s underway.
"It gets stalled lang, e, kasi I’m doing all sorts of things. But apart from that, it’s steadily moving naman.”
She is also in the hit teleserye Got 2 Believe, which features teen loveteam Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo.
“I play Gigi, Julianna’s best friend played naman by Carmina Villaroel,” she said.
Even with a lot on her plate, Nina said she is grateful for just having a family that makes it all worth it.
“Of course, I imagined myself having a family because, for me, it’s a natural path.
“I’m thankful that my family is how it is.
“It’s really tough, but it’s rewarding at the same time, because you learn so many things.
"It has helped me grow into this more mature person, with better discipline, and the way I’m so much more systematic now.”
