The Tomas Morato area in Quezon City has always been famous for its milieu of restaurants and coffee shops, but one of its best-kept secrets is the Amistad Spa and Wellness Center.
Located at the second floor on the same building of a celebrity-owned ramen house, Amistad’s Tomas Morato branch opened five months ago.
Inspired by the cozy vibe of an upscale boutique hotel, Amistad consists of 15 individual massage rooms (two of which can be expanded into a couple room), 2 VIP rooms, 2 scrub rooms, and a newly-opened foot spa area.
It’s fairly new and yet to be discovered by spa enthusiasts, so you’ll find it not as crowded as other spas in the area.
But, just in case you find yourself on the waiting list, you can sit back and relax at their spacious lounge area where comfy sofas and a big LED TV can be found.
Perhaps you can ask the staff to be served with their house tea or coffee while choosing from their massage and body scrub packages.
“We don’t pretend to be a top go-to spa. Our desire is to make the guest feel pampered in a not too small, not too crowded place.
"We want to offer something more than the usual spa by catering to the needs of our clients,” said Danny Jimenez, owner of Amistad.
PLUS POINTS FOR CLEANLINESS. After a quick tour of the spa, I opted to experience the body scrub and body massage package, which costs P1,600.
I first went to the common wet area for women, which has a steam room, two shower stalls, two enclosed toilets, locker area, and an extensive mirrored dresser.
Clients, especially those who are meticulous for cleanliness, will probably love the fact that the facilities are still spanking new and well-maintained.
Moreover, I noticed how the staff kept everything spic and span after every use.
Even the bed linens in the massage rooms seem to be regularly washed since they smell of a popular fabric softener.
COFFEE SCRUB EXPERIENCE. I started to get pampered and tried out the dry sauna, which I had all to myself on a Friday afternoon.
Afterwards, I proceeded to the scrub room, where I instantly felt relaxed because of the dim lights and plush exterior.
Dominating the far end of the room was a white tub accentuated by a draped curtain on each side of it.
Celine, who also happened to be my masseuse for that day, prepared a lukewarm milk bath for me.
Just imagine how luxurious it felt to indulge in a milk bath, which is said to be part of Cleopatra’s beauty regimen back in the day!
I soaked in the tub for five minutes and enjoyed the soothing feel of my very own milk bath.
Afterwards, I towel-dried myself and proceeded to get a full-body coffee body scrub with the help of my masseuse.
Some of the variants that Amistad offers are Bamboo Seaweed and Banana Body Scrub.
But I particularly picked their Kapeng Barako Body Scrub, since I am aware of coffee’s antioxidant properties and other skin benefits.
Aside from being a natural exfoliant, the combination of coffee grounds and olive oil is said to be a good alternative for reducing stretch marks and cellulites through constant use.
I got a good scrub for approximately 30 minutes before rinsing off with a soothing hot shower.
The standard Salt Body Scrub is also a popular choice among Amistad clients, who prefer unscented treatments.
MASSAGE TREATEMENT. For my massage treatment, I was taken to the VIP room in order to get a feel of Amistad’s VIP package, which costs P2,000 inclusive of full-body massage and body scrub.
The VIP room consists of a single bed, a lavatory, a tub, and a vanity dresser complete with toiletries.
Apparently, body scrubs can be done at the VIP room and the staff will just change the bed linen for the massage treatment afterwards.
Clients can also make use of the iPod dock in the room should they wish to listen to their own music playlist.
As for the massage treatment, I liked the fact that my therapist made sure that I was comfortable with the moderate Swedish-Thai massage that I asked for.
While it is true that any well-trained masseuse can perform a good massage, my therapist’s edge lies on her attentiveness and ability to make one feel at ease.
All in all, Amistad delivers a value-for-money service for those who are looking for head-to-toe pampering at a well-maintained spa.
Sparty (spa party) packages can also be availed, especially with their newly-opened foot spa area.
Amistad is open from Mondays to Sundays, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 AM.
