Richard Poon speaks up about how showbiz hasn't gotten in the way of his marriage with Maricar Reyes. “Kung pareho kayong taga-showbiz, may good and bad; the good being maiintindihan ng asawa mo yung long tapings. I think it turns out bad for some people, pero sa amin, so far, hindi naman siya negative."

Showbiz couple Richard Poon and Maricar Reyes have been married for over a year now, so PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press had a chat with Richard about his marriage.

THE LOOK OF LOVE. “Kamusta na daw ang Look of Love ko?" repeated Richard Poon, referring to his wife, Maricar Reyes.

“Sabi ko payat, kasi M-W-F ang taping para sa Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon,” he said jokingly.

“I’m having a hard time seeing her, kasi she would get home at 4:00 AM then leave at 6 or 7:30 AM. So pumapayat siya ngayon. She’s losing weight because of puyat,” the crooner said.

PEP.ph and other members of the press spoke with Richard at a press conference of his new album, held last October 1, at the Jet 7 Bistro in Quezon City.

Since their schedules are always jam-packed with shows and tapings does this affect their life in bed? “Life in bed…Wow, it is too early to talk about life in bed,” he said candidly.

BABY PLANS. Aside from the blossoming married life, Richard also spoke about his plan to start a family while still giving enough attention to his wife. Are they planning to have a baby soon?

“Let’s see. Hopefully, next year, sana magka-baby.

“I want to give her one to two years, for married couples, they [friends] tell us na kapag nagkaanak agad, nagiging child-centric yung marriage. I think dapat wife-centered muna, so maybe in two years. This is our one and a half, approaching two years of marriage.

“Our marriage, although not perfect, [is] mutually agreed ever since. Before I married her, I asked her, 'Okay lang ba sa 'yo na hindi muna mag-baby so I can focus on you?' So we agreed on that way back pa, we’re still on target, one year and two months," he related.

Richard and Maricar have their careers to consider, which is why having a baby should be planned carefully.

And hopefully, they can focus on being parents by next year, since Maricar's current teleserye, Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon, is about to end.

He also commented on Maricar’s decision to turn down other offers to make more time to plan a family.

“We already agreed na after nito [current teleserye] there were some offers for another teleserye, and we had to turn it down kasi mabigat talaga yung teleserye.

“But she will accept movies. There’s another movie, an indie movie. Mga 2-3 days shooting lang. Kapag ganun, she will continue doing movies. Mga appearances sa Be Careful, labas pasok lang, but not like months of heavy taping," Richard explained.

Do they want a baby boy or girl for their first child?

“Sana kung pwede, baby boy. Technically, wala, but if it’s a boy, I’ll prefer it. Kasi mas gusto kong lalake kaysa babae yung nag-aalaga sa nakababatang kapatid. I prefer a boy na mauna.”

CAREER OVER MARRIAGE. Despite the hectic schedules, the couple still manages to use their showbiz careers to their relationship’s benefit.

“I think depende sa couple minsan... kung pareho kayong taga-showbiz, may good and bad. The good being maiintindihan ng asawa mo yung long tapings, pinack up kayo, mga ganung stuff. You have the same language.

I think it turns out bad for some people, pero sa amin, so far, hindi naman siya negative.

“I think we undertsand each other more. Naiintidhan ko siya kung puyat siya, kapag dire-diretso yung taping. Minsan sa ASAP, mahaba rin yung taping so I could understand that.

ENDEARING QUALITIES. Richard also revealed that Maricar’s character role on TV is very different from her real personality. “Yes I watch, but I don’t want to watch her. When you know her in person, it’s [role] so opposite of who she is.

He enumerates the traits he admires of his wife. “I love the way she is, supportive.

"Yung iba kasing tao, supportive pero kahit mali na, oo lang ng oo. Kapag sharp naman, mag-aaway kayo nang mag-aaway.

“She has the ability to be supportive but still correct me, the way she lifts me up is very positive and I think that’s quite very rare.

“I think mas critical ako. She’s not critical, she’s very positive. Wala siyang mean words. She’s very, very nice.

SUPPORT FOR EACH OTHER’S CAREER. He revealed Maricar is very dedicated to acting. “Masipag siya manood ng mga movies para sa nuance na very subtle lang. Baligtad ako, hindi ako marunong umarte, kinakabahan ako sa camera.

They may have different fields in showbiz, but they support each other all the same without sugar-coating.

“I’ve always believed na she’s a natural, I always tell her that,” Richard said about his wife.

Richard noted that Maricar has honestly told him many times, “I don’t like your genre but I like your voice.”

Maricar has also volunteered not to give any demand on the song choices for Richard’s album.

“Sabi ni Maricar, 'Don’t let me pick, Hon, huwag ako kasi alam mong dun ako pupunta.' Her music kasi is Björk and Tori Amos.”

All the same, he appreciates the kind of music her wife listens to. “The alternative music that she listens to when she does treadmill or jogging, I also listen to it. In fact, before I was in a boy-girl band, we would sing Incubus and I played guitars.

Will his fans be seeing more of his rocker side again soon? Siguro yung magsi-shift ako na magiging rocker talaga ko, magpapa-tattoo muna ako ng buong katawan," he joked.

For nor, he said that he will stick to his current genre. “I’d stay here siguro for a while.”

Maricar is known for having a good voice. This being said, don't they consider collaborating for a project? "Wow. Posible ba yun? Album na kami yung kakanta? I think my boss ang dapat mag-decide," answered Richard.

TIME OFF. Even the busiest power couples take time off to enjoy quality time together. And Richard said that he and his wife are planning this soon.

“Kasi when she ends on October 10, mag-a- ASAP L.A. kami, e. So pagbalik naman, ang daming shows, for my music. Heavy kapag “ber” months, e.

Maybe on January, we’re going to Taiwan to see my mom. My mom wants to see her na, e. Dadalhin ko siya sa Taiwan,” he revealed.

Despite having different schedules, fields in showbiz and tastes in music, the most important thing is Richard and Maricar’s teamwork in marriage, starting a family and perhaps, even a business as well. “She told me she wants to help me start something, kasi dati siya yung tumutulong sa tatay niya to do the “books”. We really want to focus on family and maybe start a business.”
