“We’re not gifts persons. Sa love language, yun yung lowest namin," Richard shared about his relationship with wife Maricar.

While most couples look forward to each other's Christmas gift, Richard Poon and Maricar Reyes are more interested in wishing, "...maayos lang namin yung bini-bake naming chocolate cake."

That's because, "We’re not gifts person," Richard told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in an interview held late last month.

He resumed, "Sa love language, yun yung lowest namin.

"Siguro mag-gifts kami kapag may nag-instigate na iba.

"Pero yung tipong kami, ‘Tara gifts tayo?’ No, kasi yung love language namin, iba, e.

"So we try sa iba kami bumabawi, like a date together or a love letter, yung ganoon. Mas gano'n kami kaysa yung gifts.”

PLANS. Their second Christmas as a couple will most probably be spent with their relatives.

The singer said, “We’re still waiting for...kung mag-confirm yung relatives ko, kung Manila or Naga.

"Kasi usually, kung nasaan sila, doon kami pupunta, so it’s either Naga or Manila.

"Her [Maricar] folks naman, from Cagayan.

"Hindi ko sure kasi minsan bigla-bigla, they fly to Manila, so depende kung nasaan yung relatives namin, dun kami pupunta."

MEMORABLE CHRISTMAS? Maricar recounted a childhood memory.

“Nung grade school pa lang ako noon, we had a very big family reunion sa bahay namin in Alabang.

"And then, it was very memorable for me kasi yun yung last Christmas ng lola ko.

“The next year, she passed away.

"But we had so much fun kasi yung rare time na both families, both sides of the family, andoon together.”

Richard, a chef, refreshed memories of cooking for his family during the holidays.

“Our whole family is in Naga. So kapag nandoon ako nagki-Christmas, there’s one Christmas, nagluto ako for everybody.

"Lahat, as in lahat, mga tito, tita…ako, very memorable yun kasi first time yun na ako yung naghanda.

"Luto ko siya 'tapos I really cooked it special talaga, from the salad to the main course.

"Our dad was there, my sister was there so enjoy siya. Yun yung pinakamasaya kong Christmas.”

FIRST CHRISTMAS TOGETHER. Guess where the couple, who got married on June 9, 2013, spent their first Christmas eve?

At the venue of their wedding: Bellevue Hotel in Alabang.

Maricar related, “Last Christmas? Yeah, that was fun also. Kasi bumalik kami sa Bellevue where we got married.

"Doon kami nag-stay from 23 to 25.

"'Tapos yung ate niya joined us and then wala kaming Noche Buena noon.

"We went to Ministop, we went to Andok’s, it was fun…”

MEANINGFUL CHRISTMAS. Christmas has taken a whole new meaning for the two since they got married.

For Maricar, “Well before, Christmas was gifts and bakasyon from school.

"Pero ngayon, I think I really want to go back to why it’s really there—the birth of Christ, being together with your family. You go back to basics.”

Richard agreed with his wife.

“Ako, ganoon rin, Christmas comes from the root word Christ, and I think napakarami ko nang years na puro celebration, walang meaning na sa 'kin yun from that root word.

"I think it’s really, more than enjoying, I think spending time to recall lahat nung suffering Niya kasi yun yung reason that I can rejoice today.

"I’m free from the burden or the guilt and I can be forgiven dahil sa isang taong perpekto who loves somebody as flawed as me.

"I think in all the eating and celebration, I need to remember that kasi kung hindi, Christmas is just an eating binge and gift-seeking season."

CHARITY WORK. Giving is a year-round activity for Maricar and Richard.

Richard said, “Kami personally, meron kami in our church [Victory Greenhills] mismo. Meron kaming several programs.

"There’s a building program, there’s a child-education program, and we have friends in 700 Club CBN Asia.

"But usually all these things, we try to do under the radar.

"We just participate not only in Christmas even hindi siya season."
