Susan Enriquez and Cesar Apolinario on misdemeanor of journalists

As broadcasters, Susan Enriquez and Cesar Apolinario are trained to handle themselves when faced by an aggressor, “Magtimpi ka, magtimpi ka talaga. Pwede naman yun e, makokontrol mo naman."

One tenet in journalism that is often ignored is not to insert yourself in the story you are reporting.

Beyond that are the television broadcasters who have become celebrities and news reporters who have become newsmakers themselves.

A male broadcaster recently became fodder for gossip when his sex video was leaked on the Internet. A female news anchor hit the headlines for her uncalled-for side comments on air.

Just recently, a senior reporter reaped criticisms when she was caught on video having a heated argument with a private citizen at a concert.

A simple booboo as being caught on camera while she was about to throw the piece of paper she just finished reading earned for a female news anchor both kudos and mockery.

Recently, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and a few members of the press huddled with to GMA News Public Affairs newscasters Susan Enriquez and Cesar Apolinario for their views on the topic.

Susan and Cesar also host the lifestyle show on GMA News I Juander aired every Wednesday at 8pm.

Susan pointed out, “Sana maganda kung maging laman ka ng news in a positive [way], ‘di ba?”

She also stressed, “Dapat nga, as much as possible, magiging huwaran ka sa paggawa ng maganda kasi nagbabalita ka.

“You want the people to believe what you are saying, kung ano yung binalita mo.

“And then para maging credible ka rin, kailangan magpakita ka rin ng positive attitude in public.”

Cesar interjected that he and his colleagues in their division have been trained on how to handle provocations.

Parang ano lang, ‘I don’t talk to strangers’ para tapos na,” he said.

He also recalled violent encounters with fellow reporters.

“Pinagmumura na rin ako ng isang media personality in front of other media people, pero hindi ko siya pinatulan.

“Bakit mo papatulan ang isang taong nagmumura? I think kami sa GMA, mas alam namin kung ano yung role namin.

He then emphasized, “So ako, sa ganyan, kahit ba nasa public ka o nasa private ka, basta ang ginagawa mo lahat ay tama, wala ka namang dapat ikatakot.”

In the face of an aggressor, the two are trained to take the higher road.

“Parang role model, so just be it.

Kung may negative man siyang sinasabi, let them talk.”
