Rodjun Cruc on his fellow SAS mounataineers:"Iba yung experience talaga, parang after every akyat namin, nagiging mas close kami, pamilya talaga kami. Sobrang saya lang, parang walang pagod."

Television and movie personalities do have a life outside showbiz.

Take the Viber group called SAS Mountaineers, which is composed of Sunday All Stars talents Rodjun Cruz, Aicelle Louise delos Reyes, Phytos Ramirez, along with Dianne Medina.

Rodjun related to PEP.ph (Philippines Entertainment Portal) at the Merrell Capra Challenge how it all started.

"Noong nakita ng mga tao yung pictures namin, nainggit, sabi nila, ‘Next time, sama kami.’

“Hanggang dumami na kami ng dumami.

"Iba yung bonding and experience talaga, parang after every akyat namin, nagiging mas close kami, pamilya talaga kami.

THE BEGINNING. For his part, Rodjun said curiousity and a new pair of shoes got him excited to try hiking.

After he got his first pair of Merrells, Rodjun felt inclined to go hiking.

He said, "...niyaya ko sila, ‘Tara ituloy na natin yung umakyat ng bundok.’

“Parang iba e. Pag nag-gym ako, kapag bago yung suot kong pang-gym, excited akong mag-workout.

GOING FOR IT. Rodjun decided to take it seriously.

"So yung una nag-start kami, lima lang talaga kami, dalawa kami ni Kristoffer, ‘tapos tatlong mountaineers from GMA."

Their group's first major goal is to climb the Mt. Pulag, the third highest mountain in the Philippines.

HEALTH BENEFITS. But what exactly does hiking do to one's health?

According to goodhiker.com, doing it two and a half hours a week improves cardio-respiratory (heart, lungs, blood vessels) and muscular fitness, not to mention the quality of sleep.

It also lowers the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides, colon and breast cancer, and possibly lung and endometrial cancer.

Lastly, it increases bone density, and helps control the weight.
