Third time’s the charm as Pia Wurtzbach becomes the third beauty queen to bring home the crown of Miss Universe.
Despite the unconventional declaration of her victory, Pia shows that it takes patience, determination, and focus to make a dream come true.
Here are ten interesting quick bits about the new Miss Universe 2015:
1. Pia is the first Pinay Miss Universe titleholder with mixed blood.
Both Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969) and Margie Moran (Miss Universe 1973) were born to Filipino parents.
The 26-year-old beauty, however, has a German dad and a Filipina mom.
She was born in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, but grew up in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro.
She studied high school in Pasig City, which became her home at 11, the age she entered showbiz.
This has not made her journey to the crown the easiest since some bashers pointed out that she was not pure Filipino.
Pia brushed things off, took it as a challenge, and made the Filipinos appreciate the diversity of beauty.
2. Pia became a "taong gym" to achieve her toned Miss Universe-worthy bod.
Her training mainly focused on strengthening her core, and forming the legs to help her posture.
Meanwhile, her diet plan was mostly steamed or boiled food.
There were times when she'd get tempted to cheat, but she would just close her eyes and imagine the crown.
3. During her elementary days, she earned the moniker Piazilla.
In a previous interview with Sunstar.com.ph, she related, “At school, I was a wallflower. I was always the last person in
flag ceremony queue because I was the tallest in class.
"And it was difficult to have a crush because you are too tall for the boy."
She stands 5'8" by the way.
4. Joining Binibining Pilipinas in 2013 was the first time she ever joined a major pageant.
But becoming a beauty queen has been her childhood dream.
5. Part of her training was to walk in seven-inch heels, and do the "duck walk exercise every day, in heels!”
The latter entails squatting and walking slowly, using hips, quadriceps, hamstrings, and gluteal muscles for support.
It helps lengthen one’s stride and strengthen the legs and core.
Here's the result of her three-year pageant training.
6. Her Miss Universe signature
Every Miss Universe Philippines marked their time with a signature catwalk.
This time around, people—particularly America's Next Top Model host Tyra Banks—noticed Pia's "smize" or smiling with the eyes.
7. The lady can cook.
After all, she studied Culinary Arts in the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.
8. Pia used to be known as Pia Romero, her screen name in showbiz.
She was managed by Star Magic, where Bea Alonzo was her batchmate.
She appeared on ABS-CBN shows K2BU, Bora, Sa Piling Mo, and It Might Be You, which was topbilled by Bea.
9. Pia's best friend is Pauleen Luna.
The latter flooded her Instagram with live feeds about the Miss Universe pageant, and cried happy tears when the host announced the night's true results.
Pauleen quickly posted a throwback picture showing their Star Magic days.
She captioned: “You were 12 and I was 13. We had nothing but BIG dreams.
“I remember we would choose to buy food in Mini Stop instead of Brother's Burger in ABS because we only had little money. We would patiently go to workshop every single day because we wanna be big stars.
“We would wait for hours at taping because our scenes were only very few. We even shared one role in a movie. I will never forget those days.
“Simple and days made up of dreams. And now, it's so nice to know that we've both come so far. We're both blessed, in our own way, and I must say, 2015 is both our year!
“I am very glad also that you have found a deep relationship with the Lord.
“CONGRATULATIONS MISS UNIVERSE! I am equally proud of you before as I am proud of you now. You have such a good and kind heart.
"You totally deserve this! Congratulations P! Love you!”
10. High-profile suitor?
People started buzzing about the beauty queen and President Benigno Simeon Aquino III after their alleged dinner date.
Pia had not given any straight answers whether she and PNoy are indeed an item.
But before she left for the Miss Universe competition, Pia gushed about the handwritten “good luck” and bouquet of flowers she received from PNoy on the show Tonight with Boy Abunda.
PNoy was also quick to congratulate Pia via his Twitter account.
