15 trends that rocked showbiz in 2015

Alden Richards, Maine Mendoza, James Reid, and Maja Salvador (with special participation of Rayver Cruz) are among the showbiz industry's movers and shakers in 2015.

Celebrities are known trendsetters. They start a fad, influence opinions and tastes, turn a craze into mania. Everyone gets on their bus.

But in this age of social media, they don't just dictate the uso. They sometimes become the uso and even nakikiuso.

Year 2015 in the local scene saw the rise of bold fashion statements and all sorts of #goals as well as the revival of some classics, including those that were once baduy.

It was also ablaze with bombshells and phenomena.

There were words and phrases that became favorite expressions and spoofy videos that bred Internet sensations and superstars.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) rounds up 15 of these trends that became patok na patok in showbiz.

15. Round shades

Yup, anything but square frames were all the rage last year because they instantly added playfulness to any look.

13. Prints, stripes, and checkered togs galore!

What used to be a no-no in stylish dressing became "a bold statement, fashion-forward, defying convention" in 2015.

Vice Ganda, Coleen Garcia, Kim Jones and Whong Navarro were among the celebs who went around in floral printed and striped ensembles, and they pulled it off, fashionably so.

11. #WalangForever

The phrase actually became a popular "hugot" in 2014.

Its impact, however, was felt this year because of Dan Villegas's film, starring Jennylyn Mercado and Jericho Rosales. Walang Forever was hailed Best Picture in the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival 2015.

COMELEC also used it as a catchphrase during the last day of voter registration.

@Walkah_Walkahon Twitter

Even Vice President Jejomar Binay's camp used it on Twitter in retort to the statement of Edwin Lacierda, presidential spokesperson of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

Ironically, though, it was popularized by Vice Ganda whose Beauty and the Bestie was also an MMFF entry.

Jay-R and Kris Lawrence also made a song for her.
5. #Goals!
The year's most gasgas hashtag was about #goals.
From #SquadGoals, which basically means a thing or things that a group of friends must have...

Everything was really a #Goal thing...
4. Pabebe Girls

3. Pabebe Wave
This hand gesture that launched thousands of selfies and videos was a pauso of Yaya Dub.
When Eat Bulaga! declared September 26 as the National Pabebe Wave Day, it was participated by Kapuso and Kapamilya alike, politicians, sportsmen, Hollywood singers and celebrities, and people from different walks of life.
It had also caught the attention of foreign media, including BBC.
2. Dubsmash
Thanks to this mobile app, Maine Mendoza became an overnight success and, eventually, a superstar.
She uploaded her video on Facebook on April 22.

Hay Kris And Darla

The following day, it had 1M views.
It was the same video that made the Eat Bulaga! executives notice Maine, who is now the Yaya Dub.
Dubsmash also became a favorite pastime of celebrities.
1. AlDub
Undoubtedly, the tandem of Yaya Dub and Alden Richards was 2015's biggest trend.
Their accomplishments in a span of five months remain unprecedented.
They broke trending records on Twitter and ratings on television.
They achieved remarkable numbers on social media and endorsement brands.
They conquered various platforms: Internet, TV, concert stage, and, recently, the movies.
They have shaken showbiz and taken it by storm. Celebs watch them and wanna have a selfie with them.
Kung hindi mo gusto ang AlDub, lagot ka.
And anything associated with them had become a craze and a conversation piece??from Bryan White's "God Gave Me You" and their kalyeserye playlist to Yaya Dub's polka-dot apron to the plywood that separated them during the first meeting to the long table that Lola Nidora made them use on their first date to their Philippine Arena show to AlDubYou to AlDub nation, which has a formidable online presence.
Naysayers are declaring their popularity has started dwindling.
Maybe so, but what Yaya Dub and Alden have accomplished in such a short time will remain a tough act to follow in the near and far future.
