With over ten years in the hair industry, celebrity hairstylist and salon owner Mark Anthony Rosales underscores the significance of scalp care.
This observation dates back to the start of his career as a hairstylist, even before founding Marqed Salon in 2020.
"I'm a strong advocate of scalp care talaga and I believe kasi na talagang for you to have healthy hair, you have to have healthy scalp," he told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in an interview on September 9, 2024.
Mark continued, "Nagkaroon na ako ng salon a long time ago, before Marqed. And I feel like, yun talaga yung lacking, e."
The interview took place at Davines Philippines: Beauty for You and the Planet event in Bonifacio Global City.
Mark's observation is the main reason scalp care remains at the heart of his business at Marqed Salon, where a hair and scalp scanner is used for better treatment recommendations and to address hair and scalp issues.
"What I did is I incorporated the hair scanner to our hair consultation," Mark said.
"So regardless of the service, meron talagang scanning.
"Kasi I believe that a healthy scalp will give you a healthy hair."
MARK ANTHONY ROSALES's tips on how to have HEALTHY SCALP, HEALTHY HAIR
Mark points out that many Filipinos still tend to neglect their scalp to this day.
When asked about the common mistakes Filipinos make regarding scalp care, he replied, "Everything, actually."
Mark expounded, "They forget that the scalp is part of their skin.
"Kailangan rin siya, they need to have a deep cleansing, kailangan siya may extra nourishing, moisture, ganyan.
"And kasi ang Pinoy, what we want is just to achieve the color. So regardless what will happen next, as long as we achieve the color, okay lang sila."
Get a hair scan at a salon
To begin a proper routine, Mark recommends getting a scalp and hair scan at a salon.
This helps in identifying issues and allows experts to give more accurate treatment recommendations.
Mark said, "You have to know your hair and scalp status and that will only happen inside a salon. And after that, the initial treatment, yung tinatawag na deep cleansing."
DO THE PROPER WAY OF CLEANSING YOUR HAIR AND SCALP
For at-home hair-and-scalp-care, Mark advises using products suited to your needs.
However, ensure you wash your head with shampoo and conditioner thoroughly to prevent product build-up, which can lead to dandruff on the scalp.
"You have to start with the basic which is your shampoo and conditioner...
"The only time naman that you'll have a dandruff using conditioner is pag hindi na-cleanse nang maayos. Kasi there will be product build up."
Mark added, "The conditioner kasi, ang pinaka-need ng conditioner is the ends of our hair. Kasi kung baga sa isang tao, yun yung pinaka-matanda na.
"Unlike the one na nasa scalp natin, it's near dun sa roots so mayroon pa siyang source of nourishing, moisture.
"So you have to focus talaga you conditioner sa ends. But again, it depends with your hair status."
SHAMPOO WITH COLD WATER
Environmental factors, such as the water temperature used to wash your hair and scalp, significantly contribute to their condition.
Mark recommends avoiding washing your hair and scalp with warm water.
He explained, "As simple as kailangan cold water yung ginagamit mo when you wash your hair because pag-hot, it will open the pores."
For a post-wash routine, heat protectants are ideal, not just for those who use heat styling tools, but also to shield the hair from the sun.
"You need to use a heat protectant kasi even you don't have the color, there's fading sa init... So there's a lot of things naman that you can do at the comfort of your home pa rin."
But most importantly, Mark recommends addressing the primary cause of scalp issues directly, which is stress.
"Of course, syempre... ang pinaka-trigger kasi for you to have bad scalp is stress. So you have to manage your stress talaga."
MARK ANTHONY ROSALES: SUSTAINABILITY IN BEAUTY
Mark is pleased to see that an increasing number of Filipinos are becoming aware of the importance of scalp care, with more salons now specializing exclusively in this area.
He said, "Now, I'm very happy that there are some salons na who cater a specific service ng scalp lang.
"There are small steps na ang Pilipino, na they're also getting more aware in terms of scalp care."
Apart from promoting scalp care, Mark takes great pleasure in participating in sustainable beauty campaigns.
Specifically, he supports Davines Philippines' efforts in marine conservation through their collaboration with CORA Philippines to back initiatives for endangered ocean species.
CORA Philippines was founded by former actress Antoinette Taus.
Mark shared with PEP.ph that in his own business, he has consistently promoted sustainability, even in small ways such as using refillable bottles.
"Honestly, when I'm starting pa lang, since 2018... na-inspire ako with Davines talaga. The first scanner na nakita ko was with them.
"And in terms of sustainability, even before naman we are promoting to use recyclable and sustainable materials.
"Like, for example, when the time the salons are closed, diba we initiated to have our own product, yung purple shampoo na Grape Shake.
"So we promote na puwedeng i-reuse the bottle, ganyan. They can refill that. Yung mga ganon.
"And at the same time, cost-efficient siya and at the same time, it's good for the environment. In those simple ways, we can leave an impact in the community."
