According to the international news agency Agence France-Presse, the most common cosmetic procedures being done in Asia are eyelid surgery, breast reduction, nose enhancement, liposuction, and hair transplant.
This data was presented in Paris, France, by the International Master Course on Aging Science in 2017.
Following up on this report, PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked Dr. Manny Calayan, a pioneer in beauty industry in the Philippines, on the status of cosmetic surgery in the country.
Understand that cosmetic surgery, which is generally about enhancement of one’s looks, is different from plastic surgery, which is about reconstruction of facial and body features to correct medical conditions.
Dr. Manny confirmed to PEP.ph through an e-mail exchange that more Filipinos are opting for cosmetic surgery, and the most popular procedure is rhinoplasty or nose job.
He explained, "I think it’s because they want to look mestizo or mestiza, brought about by colonial mentality among Filipinos."
But he emphatically added that the main reason most Filipinos opt for a cosmetic surgery is to gain self-confidence.
"The most common reason why Pinoys undergo cosmetic surgery is to boost their self-confidence, aside from the usual reason that they want to look younger and better for their present jobs.
"What's most important is that those who undergo these kinds of procedures ultimately achieve their goal: boost confidence.
"They have better outlook in their lives after the enhancement. They are more self-confident about their new looks."
Dr. Manny also offered his observation that the supposed stigma surrounding cosmetic surgery is not about the procedure itself, but the perception of vanity being the reason for it.
He continued, “Cosmetic surgery is not only for vanity, but it's also a necessity, depending on the purpose of the patient why he or she did it.
"I think it's not about shame, it's about the stigma of our society that cosmetic surgery is for vanity.
"But it's getting common nowadays to undergo cosmetic surgery procedure not only for the looks but also for some medical reasons."
On reports about women elsewhere getting addicted to beauty enhancement procedures, Dr. Manny noted it’s not all that bad “as long as the procedures done would still look natural even after several procedures have been done."
But he reminded that it’s important for patients to be both physically and psychologically prepared for the changes after cosmetic surgery.
Dr. Manny said, "They should be psychologically prepared for any changes and they have to be ready of what to expect from their changes, whatever it is."
Briefly, manage your expectations. Cosmetic surgeons can enhance and improve your appearance. They don't do magic.
