Lily Monteverde sang "From the Candy Store" at the 80th birthday celebration of her husband Remy Monteverde.
The 1956 Tony Bennett classic, which had Mother Lily and Father Remy in tears, was their theme song.
The party was held on December 25, Christmas Day, at Gloria Maris restaurant, Greenhills, San Juan, and was attended by their children Roselle, Meme, and Dondon plus grandchildren.
When it was time for Mother Lily to give her speech, she recounted those days she was courting Father Remy, who was then the team captain of San Beda College basketball team.
"Hindi ako nagsisisi na ako ang nanligaw sa kanya noong araw.
"Yes, Remy and I met during our college days. He was captain ball of the San Beda College basketball team, and I was a student at Maryknoll."
She chose him over her graduation.
Mother Lily continued, "After two years of being boyfriend-girlfriend, ipinagpalit ko ang class graduation ko to marry him.
"Nahihiya ako na magpakasal, kasi marami ang nanliligaw sa kanya, baka maunahan pa ako."
Since then, Christmas Day has been a double celebration for the movie producer.
"We are not only celebrating Christmas Day. We are also celebrating and giving thanks to my beloved Remy’s birthday.
"My dearest husband turns 80 today as a fulfilled man who has raised five wonderful children and adorable grandchildren."
She also commended him as a husband and a father.
"Not all of you know but Remy and I have been married for 55 years.
"I am proud and happy to say that I am lucky to have him as my partner.
"Remy is a devoted father, a loving and dutiful husband.
"I owe him a big part of my glorious success. Through the years, he supported me all the way and for that, I am always grateful,” she said.
