Son of farmer and teacher finishes cum laude at Yale University

He made history as the first-ever Pisay–CMC alumnus to graduate from Yale.

Kilalanin si Nathan Wayne Ariston, na lumaki sa Maguindanao del Norte at nagtapos bilang cum laude sa Yale University.

Ipinagbubunyi ngayon ng mga taga-Southern Mindanao ang tagumpay ng kababayan nilang si Nathan Wayne Ariston, 21.

Nagtapos si Nathan na cum laude sa prestihiyosong Yale University sa U.S. nitong May 2025.

Mayroon siyang dalawang Bachelor of Science degrees: Physics at Mathematics.

Si Nathan ay mula sa katutubong grupo ng Teduray sa Southern Mindanao.

Isang magsasaka ang kanyang ama at public school teacher naman ang kanyang ina.

Bukod sa pagtatapos bilang cum laude sa Yale, may isa pang parangal si Nathan.

“He was also awarded the Howard L. Schultz Prize, given to the Yale student who best reflects excellence, inventiveness, and good taste in experimental physics that characterized the brilliance of Professor Schultz, particularly known for his work on atom-smashing devices and the Yale linear accelerator,” post sa Facebook ng Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS) nitong June 18, 2025.

Nakasaad pa sa caption: “In his early days at Pisay, Nathan earned international medals in various fields such as Earth Science and Chemistry.

“He is the first-ever Pisay-CMC alumnus to be accepted to Yale.

“A proud Teduray and the son of a farmer and a public school teacher, he carries with him not only academic prestige but a deep commitment to give back to his roots in Maguindanao and Mindanao.”

CONSISTENT ACHIEVER IN SCHOOL

Si Nathan ay mula sa Nuro, Upi, Maguindanao del Norte.

Bata pa lamang ay nagpamalas na siya ng husay sa pag-aaral.

Nagtapos siya bilang valedictorian sa Nuro Central Elementary School.

Naging scholar at medalist siya sa Philippine Science High School- Central Mindanao Campus.

Nag-uwi rin si Nathan ng karangalan sa kanyang paaralan at sa Pilipinas mula sa mga international competitions na sinalihan niya.

Nanalo siya ng silver medal sa International Earth Science Olympiad sa Daegu, South Korea, at bronze medal sa 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad sa Istanbul, Turkey.

Nag-graduate siya ng high school noong 2021.

Ayon sa post ng PSHSS that same year, nakakuha siya ng admissions at scholarships sa mga kilalang unibersidad sa Amerika at Singapore gaya ng:

  • Georgia Institute of Technology at University of California – Irvine para sa kursong BS Physics
  • Nanyang Technological University sa Singapore para sa mga kursong Physics at Mathematics

Full scholarship grant naman ang nakuha niya sa Yale University, na kanyang pinili.

Nito lamang June 23, naging panauhing pandangal si Nathan sa ginanap na assembly program sa Nuro Central Elementary School.

Nai-post ang kanyang speech sa Facebook, at ang isa sa mga paalala niya: "Tiwala sa sarili ang kailangan upang makamit ang gustong maabot.

Sa interviews kay Nathan, ipinahayag niyang gagamitin ang pinag-aralan para tulungan ang kanyang komunidad.

Ani Nathan: “The best way I could give back… is through offering my soon?to?be expertise in STEM… specifically in Maguindanao and the other Muslim Mindanao areas."
