Janine Gutierrez has a sensible and practical approach to clothes and fashion.

Instead of owning lots of it, she looks for quality when buying them.

She says, "Until now, some people assume ang dami kong damit. But in fact, if you see my closet, medyo hindi talaga siya puno.

"As in konti lang talaga damit ko, but I have a lot of basics. So, parang, I just mix and match," Janine tells PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on July 16, at the press conference of Comfort Philippines, maker of a laundry detergent brand.

Janine has been that way since she was a kid, a "favorites girl"—which means she wears her favorite clothes again and again.

She recounts, "Naalala ko yung when I was in grade school, I had one favorite shirt. When I was in high school, I had one favorite jacket. 'Tapos paulit-ulit lang.

"And yung pieces na yun, talagang yung pinag-ipunan ko or bigay ng mom ko, paulit-ulit lang talaga.

"I have this one favorite denim jacket that my mom bought for me when I was like three years old.

"Pero binili na niya malaking size na for the future. So up to now, as in it's my favorite denim jacket."

Her mom is the actress Lotlot de Leon.

Janine is also a fan of Marie Kondo, author of the popular self-help book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: the Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.

This book later became a Netflix series, which was titled Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.

Both the book and the series encourage people to declutter their homes, keeping only the items that "spark joy" to them and discard those that don't.

This process eventually became known as the "KonMari Method."

Janine follows Kondo's method, but says she goes beyond the "spark joy" approach.

The 29-year-old star stresses the importance of buying and keeping clothing items that one really likes to save not just money, but also time and effort.

She continues, "Even before the Netflix special came out, my friend recommended the book, so I read the book.

"'Tapos parang yung philosophy niya is, aside from the whole sparking joy thing, if you have only what you really like in your closet, it's gonna be so easy to choose what to wear.

"Alam mo yung there are days na parang, 'Oh my god, wala ako masuot.'

"If you edit your closet enough na everything in it is something that you like, ang dali pala.

"It's true. It's so much easier when you're in a rush or you have to bring clothes.

"Kung may trip ka or may event ka, ang dali na lang pumili because you already know what's in your closet."

The Kapuso actress has a different take on shopping as well.

It begins with rummaging through the closets of her mom and her grandma Pilita Corrales, whom Janine affectionately calls "mamita."

She explains, "I don't really get to shop. What I get to do often is shop my lola's closet or my mom's closet, ganyan."

Janine even used to raid the closet of her brother Diego.

She relates, "When I was younger, when I was in high school, I would shop naman my little brother's closet. Nung uso pa yung mga baby tee..."

And when she goes shopping, she does not waste so much time finding what she wants, but goes straight to the "specific piece" she has in mind.

Janine says, "Alam ko na hinahanap ko. That way, it's easier for me to check what I like. Alam ko na kung saan titingin kasi I know already what I'm gonna buy."

Needless to say, Janine does not make purchases on a spur of the moment.

She says, "I'm the type of person na super pinag-iispan yung mga purchase, especially if it's a more expensive purchase, like, I'll see that I like something 'tapos parang, 'Hmm, okay. I like it.'

"And then kapag hindi ko pa siya nakalimutan next week, tignan ko ulit. 'Shucks, parang gusto ko pa rin talaga siya.'

"Kapag hindi ko makalimutan, dun ko lang siya bibilhin."

Janine recalls the first-ever designer item she bought.

"It was a bag. Givenchy na Antigona na baby pink.

"Yun talaga pinag-isipan ko talaga siya nang matagal."

Until now, Janine takes good care of her Antigona bag, which ranges between PHP94,500 and PHP242,500 at current prices.

"I have it restored already. I still keep it in the bag with a pillow inside tucked in," she says.

Janine says she gets this habit of taking care of her belongings from her mom Lotlot and her lola Pilita, who has her clothes from decades ago properly stored.

"I want to be like that din na, parang, if I have a bag, puwede ko ipamana. It's the same with clothes.

"I guess I learned that from my lola and my mom na quality pieces will really last you longer if you take care of them well."

In an interview with Preview.ph, Pilita praises her granddaughter's sense of fashion.

Asia's Queen of Songs says with a laugh, "She is pretty and already very stylish. I hope she got that from me!

"She's always well-dressed even if she's wearing, let's say, shorts lang... With her height and her build, she can wear anything.

"And when she wears it, it looks good, di ba?"

In a previous interview with PEP.ph, Janine talked about cherishing her mamita's hand-me-down clothes.

She considers herself particularly lucky that she and 79-year-old OPM icon have the same shoe size.

She said then, "Yung mga luma niyang shoes, luma niyang bags, ako yung nakakapag-recycle."

She added that "old clothes" bring "another layer to whatever you're wearing."
