In the colorful 1980s era, bigger was better, the bright and bold were typical.
The Bagets barkada was then the It squad, That's Entertainment was the go-to show for artista wannabes and fans, and the ultimate hearththrobs were the Menudo members and The Karate Kid star Ralph Macchio.
Those were the days when outfits could win a Touch The Color game, guys could pull off short shorts and cropped tops, and girls considered leg warmers a fashion essential.

Many on the list of the cool and trendy during the decade were truly outrageous that a resurgence was highly improbable.
Some simply were made extinct not a moment sooner than the entry of the Computer Age.
Here's a roundup of things that people in their 30s and 40s used to rave about that kids these days dismiss as dead as doornails.
1. Shoulder pads
They became fashionable symbolizing power dressing, the shoulders appearing broader.

Rihanna and Lady Gaga revived the shoulder pads seven years ago, inflating them outrageously.

They became a fad of sorts for two years, but did not gain a huge following in Manila.
Broader shoulders are now made in the gym, not by clothing manufacturers.
2. Baggy pants for guys
We're talking here about the colorful pairs, which some gym trainers sometimes wear to this day.
But even at the height of their popularity, the time when Gary Valenciano made them so cool, guys had preferred the acid-washed jeans, neon pants, and even the short shorts.

3. Four-inch-high bangs
Big hair will come and go in different lengths and forms, but the teased bangs (the kind that would take minutes to set) had not been successful in reclaiming its glory days. Plus, the Aqua spray net combi was dead on the news about its ruinous effect on the ozone layer.
The hair-spray brand made an attempt to penetrate the market again in 2009, but this generation seems to prefer using hair gel for "extra strong hold" styling.

4. Olivia Newton John's "Let's get physical"
If the 80s people think this type of workout is super effort (stress on the second syllable)...
...do not take it against them because getting fit then was this easy and quite lazy.
5. Stilettos with leg warmers
Given the country's hot and humid weather, who needs leg warmers?
But four decades ago, a lot of stars had worn them with stilettos in production numbers.

6. Mighty Kid shoes
Kid's footwear was a toss between Gregg shoes, which was actually born in 1930s, and Mighty Kid shoes.
The latter was the "in" thing because of its velcro strap. It was durable, too.
7. Walkman
Even if it was endorsed by Chris Pratt as Star Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, the Walkman cassette player is now history.
Who would have the patience to rewind and fast forward music manually when it will only take one click with Spotify?
But keeping a unit is still cool.

8. Swatch watches
Swatch watches were then very affordable that people used to wear several per wrist at the same time.
They were even used for styling hair.
But there's really no compelling reason to do that now.
9. Sampaguita garland
The late German Moreno had made our national flower a staple in his shows That's Entertainment and GMA Supershow.
There was even a segment when fans would be given the chance to place garlands on the neck of their idols.
But stricter security measures in the studio had led to the demise of this uso.
10. Snail mail
Celebrities used to receive a heap of letters sent by their fans via post.
But with the e-mail, Internet, social media, and cell phones, kids in the future will probably never experience what it is like to wait a few days for a reply in the mailbox.

The rest will be cyclical, and will keep on reminding us of the colorful era that was.
How about you? What's your best memory of the 80s?
