Kate Middleton recently honored Princess Diana by wearing the late princess' tiara to a ball.

From the moment that the world witnessed Prince William and Kate Middleton announce their engagement, people couldn’t help but remember the late Princess Diana through Kate.

One of the prominent ways that the Duchess of Cambridge and the late Princess of Wales drew comparison was through their classic sense of fashion.

Here are five key fashion moments when Kate drew style inspiration from Diana.

The Engagement

Princess Diana and Prince Charles (left) announced their engagement in February 1981; Kate and Prince William (right) announced their engagement in November 2010.

Both outfits had become iconic dresses and part of the unforgettable royal fashion moments.

Diana and Kate both wore blue to match their sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

The Royal Wedding

For different reasons, their wedding gowns became one of the most talked about royal dresses.

Princess Diana’s Elizabeth Emanuel wedding gown drew attention for its "fourteen meters of ivory-colored taffeta silk decorated with old lace, puff sleeves that looked like candy floss, a ruched neckline, ribbons, and a crinoline skirt."

Not to mention the fact that it had "ten thousand mother-of-pearl sequins, stitched by hand, shimmered in the eight-meter-long train."

On the other hand, Kate’s Alexander McQueen wedding gown had less frills.

According to Hello Magazine, the Duchess collaborated with designer Sarah Burton to create a design that merged “royal tradition with a modern sense of style.”

The Reception

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a different dress for her wedding reception at Clarence House in April 2001.

The “white angora bolero cardigan” and the “diamante embroidered detail” echoed one of Diana’s looks in 1988.

The Firstborn

The Tiara

At the recently-held Diplomatic Reception ball in Buckingham Palace, Kate honored Princess Diana by wearing one of the late princess’ favorites, the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara.

Crafted in 1913, Queen Elizabeth II gave the intricate pearl and diamond-encrusted tiara to Diana in 1981.
