Kat Gumabao recently made waves in France after joining the plus-size models who walked the runway of Paris Fashion Week.
In an email exchange with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), she revealed how she got the project.
"I auditioned talaga straight sa organizers.
"I prayed for it and kept myself healthy, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally."
One of the challenges she faced was financing her trips.
Kat related, "Luckily, I found a few personal sponsors, and PAL [Philippine Airlines] was generous enough to sponsor my flights."
And since she traveled alone, she also found it quite hard to take photos of herself.
On Instagram, she wrote, "The only downside to traveling alone is that it's very difficult to get decent photos of yourself... I put my phone and tripod on the stage right in front of the catwalk."
Last September, Kat became part of New York Fashion Week, where she "put the #Philippines on the map when it comes to plus-size fashion."
She modeled for Torrid, a clothing retailer for plus-size women.
Kat narrated how she scoured the modeling stint for the brand. "I joined a contest for Torrid, a plus-size brand. “Out of 15,000 applicants, they only chose ten people, and one of the perks of being part of the Top 10 was we got to model in New York Fashion Week.
"Yes, they know na Pilipina ako. They just couldn't advertise it because the mechanics of the contest was I need to be from one of the United States' territories.
"And since I was born in San Francisco, I represented San Francisco."
One of her dreams came true after she met Candice Huffine, an American plus-size model.
Kat's caption for their wefie: "I am amazed by your humility and authenticity and I super duper appreciate your genuine interest to connect with each and everyone of us."
On her trip to Big Apple, Kat remarked, "The experience was amazing.
"It was my first time ever in New York City, and to be there for NYFW was even more surreal."
This international model is the daughter of Dennis Roldan and former model Lollie Imperial.
Kat is the sister of volleyball star Michele Gumabao (a former varsity member of the De La Salle University spikers) and actor Marco Gumabao.
