In September 2016, the “palengke bag” trended online after designer brand Balenciaga released its Cabas Shopper handbag at Demna Gvasalia's fall/winter show.
Many Pinoys saw the resemblance of the expensive bag, which retails at US$2,000, to the bright-colored and striped "palengke bag," which costs ten pesos.
