This year's much-awaited return of the Bench runway show promises to be bigger and better.
Aside from celebrating the giant lifestyle brand's 30th anniversary, extensive preparations were done for the upcoming underwear and denim show slated for November 18, at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena.
According to Ben Chan, the company's founder and chief executive officer, it has been a while since they held a Bench show in a big venue.
"We haven't done it for three years," he said.
Bench's underwear show used to be a biennial event, held every other year.
The last show titled The Naked Truth was held in 2014, also at the MOA Arena.
Ben admitted they really intended not to hold a show in the last three years.
"In a way, yes. Because if we did it last year, I guess we have to do something this year. So we opted to do it on our 30th year.
"This time, we’re quite prepared for our anniversary, so it’s gonna be bigger and better."
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) interviewed Ben at the sneak peek of the upcoming runway show held at the Ibiza Beach Club, on Monday, October 23.
If in the past, they had up to a year's advance notice on their big-venue event, the announcement this year happened only last August or three months before the ramp show.
"We were trying to get survey from the millennials, from people we’ve done shows [with] before, who grew up with Bench and the people who [were] against the last," he revealed.
"So we made a survey, and it was positive. So it was only August we finally decided and pushed through with it."
He continued, "It’s gonna be bigger than before because we tapped the Canadian group to be part of the show also.
"The last one was directed by a Canadian director and Robbie [Carmona] was the choreographer."
STARS ON THE RUNWAY. The business magnate also confirmed the attendance of international models Trevor Signorino, Ivo Buchta, and Pietro Boselli—the viral Math Teacher from London.
“Yes, they’re all confirmed,” said Ben.
“As a matter [of fact], we already bought their [plane] tickets, so they have to be here.
"We don’t know what’s gonna happen because 13th is a holiday until the 15th of November because of the ASEAN.
“Though tapos na [ang ASEAN before the show], baka lang ma-delay ang flight...I hope not.”
A multitude of showbiz stars are expected to come to the big event now that new and more Bench faces have been introduced to the media.
Among the new crop of endorsers include Maxine Medina, Bianca King, Beauty Gonzales, Kim Domingo, and Sanya Lopez.
Among the male stars who will walk the runway include Albie Casio, Mark Gumabao, Kiko Estrada, Addy Raj, Mark Mugen, Bruno Santos, and David Licauco.
Will there be more GMA-7 artists who will walk the runway compared to those from ABS-CBN?
“Alam mo, to be honest, I don’t know how many from ABS-CBN and how many from GMA-7," Ben answered.
“We do the final casting pero baka may pumasok pa.”
COLE SPROUSE AND BROOKLYN BECKHAM. To the fans of the Riverdale star Cole Sprouse and Brooklyn Beckham, the son of David and Victoria Beckham, sorry, they won't be coming.
Ben described what it was like working with Brooklyn, whom he met during the latter's photo shoot for Bench.
“You’ll be surprised. You know, I was surprised myself. The night before the pictorial, siyempre iniisip ko baka spoiled brat ito.
"Diyusko, napakabait. Siya pa lalapit sa iyo, i-introduce niya ang sarili nya.”
Ben had the same nice words for Cole.
“Naku, napakabait rin. Siya pa nagpaplantsa ng damit niya sa shoot," he recalled.
Ed's Note: PEP.ph has corrected this article. When first published, our headline said that Cole Sprouse and Brooklyn Beckham were joining Bench's 30th anniversary show. But upon further verification, we found out that Ben Chan did not say that the two Hollywood personalities would be arriving, and was clearly referring to the international models.
