Beauty queen-maker and talent manager Jonas Gaffud has a new modeling contest he himself created and conceptualized.
GLAM, or Global Asian Model, is open to male and female contestants, who will compete for three and two titles, respectively.
He says “For men, we have the Manhunt which is the biggest title, and we have Best Model of the World na dating ginagawa na yan noon. Nanalo nga riyan si Rocky Salumbides sa Istanbul, Turkey.
“Sa Turkey pa rin ang competition, sila naman ang nag-reach out sa akin. Ang mananalo sa Best Model of the World dito, magko-compete rin sa Turkey this December.
“Yung Manhunt naman, magko-compete sa Australia sa December 2.”
Another men's title up for grabs is GLAM Philippines, which is a brainchild of Jonas.
"Ito ang itinayo kong modelling competition," he began.
"Pinag-isa ko na lang lahat para hindi naman iba-ibang gastos pa, di ba? Pinag-isa-isa kong lahat pero ang winner naman ng GLAM Philippines will compete in the international competition which I will also put up."
The international competition is GLAM International. It is open to all models from anywhere in the world, as long as they are of Asian descent.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) caught up with Jonas at Uptown Mall, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, last September 12 to talk about his latest venture.
He tells us, “I think, it’s about time to promote the Asian culture, heritage, and our looks. I think that the Asian look is global and we can compete globally, and the market is focusing now on Asia.
“That’s why I’m focusing now on Asia.”
Jonas also clarifies GLAM was not born from WynWyn Marquez's victory in the Reina Hispanoamericana beauty pageant.
He says, “No, I created this 2012 pa. Hindi ko pa alam ang Reina Hispanoamericana. Pero, naging busy ako. I think I needed more time and more experience to be able to put up something like this.”
Jonas further notes that GLAM is purely a modeling contest and not a beauty pageant.
“All of these are modeling lang, walang Q and A. Ang kailangan ko ay mukha para sa commercial and prints, and yung body and height for the runway.”
GLAM winners are assured of not just their titles, but a guaranteed cash prize and sustainable work.
“The winners for local, well, hindi ko alam kung paano ko sasabihin to—I feel for people who joined beauty pageant na ang dami-raming beauty pageant pero after that, wala namang plan.
“And then, walang cash prizes pa yata ang iba. I’m not looking down at them ha, I’m just sayang naman, nandoon na, e. Bigyan naman ng career.”
Male and female GLAM winners will receive a Mercator modeling contract worth PHP300,000, as well as a talent contract with Empire.ph. Jonas handles both Mercator and Empire.ph.
And if the contract will not yield modeling jobs for the winners, they will still receive a PHP300,000 cash prize after a year.
“Mercator yun, iba ang Empire.ph. So dalawa ang kanyang magagawa. Magiging malawak ang kanyang work. All of the winners will have the same prizes.”
Qualified applicants must have a height of 5'7" for ladies, and 5'11" for gentlemen.
Jonas explains, “Modeling kasi ito, hindi to pageant. So you have to be tall. Hindi naman to parang si Neil Perez sa Mr. International, pageant yun, e. Ito kasi, modeling at may height requirement talaga sa catwalk, sa runway.”
Meanwhile, the age requirement is 18-25 years old for females and 18-30 for males.
Interested qualified applicants can show up for the audition/go-see on September 22 and 23 for the first GLAM contest at Empire Studio in Uptown Mall, BGC, Taguig City.
REVIVING THE ART OF MODELING
We asked Jonas why he decided to hold a modeling contest instead of a beauty pageant, when he has made a name for himself as a beauty queen-maker as head of Aces and Queens.
Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Miss World 2013 Megan Young, and Miss International 2016 Kylie Verzosa all trainedis trained under Jonas.
“Mahilig ako to go against the flow,” he answers.
“I started as a modeling agency/agent before going full-time into pageant.
"This is business, this is not something I’m just passionate about. This is business first and foremost and Mercator is a modeling agency."
He adds, “And gusto ko lang buhayin yung modeling scene, na meron pa rin na ganito. Kasi with the advent of social media, technology, everybody can be a model.
“Unlike beauty queens, hindi. Sasali ka ng pageant to be a beauty queen. Ngayon, you can be an influencer. Pose-pose ka lang, you’ll have followers.
“Pero yung art of modeling, nawawala. Yun ang gusto kong ibalik.”
