Being quarantined has opened for Andrea Torres a window to fulfilling her mother Emerita's dream of starting a business.
On June 1, 2020, the Kapuso star and her family launched Family Favorites, an online startup selling savory snacks especially made by Andrea's "supermama."
The 30-year-old actress tells PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that the online snack bar is the fruit of their passion for cooking.
Andrea says, "My mom and I love cooking, especially for other people.
"We believe in the magic of good food—how it instantly uplifts your mood or make togetherness more memorable.
"I’ve been wanting to start a food business for my mom for so long but couldn’t find a location.
"So we’d try selling in bazaars during Christmas season. The feedback was very favorable.
"I remember going back and forth the house to bake and cook because our stocks were quickly running out."
Andrea says she knew "there was potential" when colleagues and friends they gifted with their foodstuff began inquiring if they could order.
With more and more people doing online selling during the pandemic, Andrea and Ermita decided to get on the bandwagon and launch their own food-delivery service.
The Better Woman star says, "Since food-delivery businesses surged this quarantine, we felt it’s time to grab the opportunity to officially launch a brand.
"This is just an initial line-up. We want to start with a few to get a feel of it, master the process, and make sure that everything we deliver comes out perfect."
TIRED, HAPPY, FULFILLED
Everyone in Andrea's family is assigned a task, hence the name Family Favorites.
But with time on her hands, Andrea ends up doing most everything with her mom.
She says, "From grocery shopping, cooking, and packaging to promoting, talking to customers, and booking deliveries.
"We do everything at home. We provided an area in the house for this business, making sure that everything is completely sanitized and in order.
"That’s why no matter how tiring it gets, we both go to bed extremely happy and fulfilled."
The challenge for Andrea and Emerita at this point is keeping up with the orders, insisting they do them all themselves to ensure quality.
The Kapuso star says, "There were challenging parts but we never lost our enthusiasm. A lot of our customers order everything off the menu or at least more than one item.
"We’re really perfectionists when it comes to our products, so we want to do it ourselves."
Another challenge for Andrea and her mom is maintaining their supply of packing materials.
She relates, "Since a lot of people are into it now, there’s a shortage of good packaging materials, but we also don’t want to change the original ingredients and packaging.
"It’s really a lot of work but always worth it."
What makes the hard work all worth it for Andrea is not only because the small business has been doing well from the get-go. It is seeing her mom happy.
"I’m so proud of my mom. This is really her calling. I can see the glow in her eyes, especially when we started getting feedback and reorders."
Family Favorites is offering savory snacks, such as polvoron, cheese pimiento sandwich spread, bread pudding with vanilla sauce, and stuffed mushrooms.
The latest addition to their growing menu is their "weekly specials."
"We’re slowly starting to offer more with our Weekly Specials," Andrea says. "Here, you can try viands like beef pepper steak, callos, etc.
"Right now, we still can’t make them a staple given that we have limited manpower. But we’re really working on ways we can expand."
