"You are what you eat" applies not just to your weight but to your overall health.

In fact, your diet and beverage choices can play a key role in cancer prevention.

This is according to Dr. Mu Feng, an oncosurgeon and minimally invasive oncology expert.

"Eat more fruits and vegetables," he advised.

WHAT TO EAT

FRUITS

According to webMD website, the antioxidants found in berries may stop the body's natural process of creating free radicals that can damage cells.

The phloretin, "a phytochemical that may have anti-tumor activities," found in pears can help, too.

Pineapples have bromelain, an enzyme that can also "reduce certain compounds associated with cancer inflammation and tumor growth,' said a 2016 studies reported by Medical News Today website.

The carotenoids found in orange fruits have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

VEGETABLES

Meanwhile, these are the veggies found on the list of American Institute for Cancer research:

  • Asparagus
  • Brocolli
  • Carrots
  • Cauliflower
  • Coffee
  • Flaxseed
  • Garlic

Note that there is no single food that can protect a person against cancer by itself.

But some are actually beneficial to certain types of cancer.

WHAT NOT TO EAT

Steer clear of smoked food and fried meat.

Why?

The Cleveland Clinic newsroom's simple explaination is: the "smoke itself is one of the things that can create carcinogens."

But between red and white meat, it's better to pick the latter.

Experts also advised eating in moderation.

Overall, the advice was to "avoid overcooking or cooking foods at high temperatures."

WHAT TO TAKE

THYMOSIN PEPTIDE POWDER

This peptide, according to Thebiostation.com, has a key role in "overseeing T cells, which are critical to your immune response."

It can help "resist infections, illnesses, and disease."

The T cells, according to National Cancer Institutes' dictionary, develop from stem cells in the bone marrow...[and] help protect the body from infection and may help fight cancer."

It is also called T lymphocyte and thymocyte.

To reiterate, based on the research of Thebiostation.com, the thymosin peptide powder can:

  • Ensure that your T cells work correctly and effectively.
  • Increase the number of T cells your body produces when you're ill.
  • Eradicate compromised cells so they don't multiply.
  • Prevent infections, viruses, and diseases from spreading further in your body.

HYDROGEN MEDICINE

Dr. Feng stated that hydrogen medicine can prevent and help in cancer treatment, citing a scientific experiment on mice with skin cancer.

The disease, he noted, subsided with hydrogen intake. That’s because hydrogen cleans free radicals that harm cells.

Hydrogen treatment suppresses "cell proliferation, invasion, and migration," reported National Health Institute.

WHAT TO DRINK

The oncosurgeon only mentioned "green tea."

Among its benefits, according to Cancer research UK, are:

  • It boosts immune system which might help them fight their cancer
  • It improves health, energy levels and well being
  • It gets rid of toxins in the body

But there is not enough evidence to say that it might prevent certain cancers.

Lastly, go for a healthier lifestyle.

Dr. Feng advised: “Stop smoking. Don’t chew tobacco. Say no to electronic cigarettes.

"Lessen body weight through exercise. Be happy and avoid stress.

"Get seven to eight hours of sleep a day."

Dr. Feng has a consulation office at the 5th floor of Adriatico Square, corner Malvor st. Malate, Manila.
