Pinay chef wins PHP15M on TV show with lugaw, kaldereta dishes

Ang Pinay chef na si Rhoda Magbitang ang nagwagi sa multi-awarded American reality TV show na Top Chef Season 23.

Ilan sa awards na natanggap ng American reality TV ay Emmy, James Beard, at Critics Choice Awards.

Ang naging ticket to success ni Rhoda: four-course meal, kabilang ang version niya ng tortang talong, caldereta, at lugaw bilang pagkilala sa kanyang Filipino roots.

Ang kanyang napanalunan ay $250,000 prize money o tinatayang PHP15.3 million. Maitatampok din siya sa ilang well-known food and lifestyle magazines.

Puwedeng sabihing nakatadhana si Rhoda na manalo sa reality TV show.

Mid-season kasi ng show, na-eliminate siya mula sa programa.

Napabilang siya sa Last Chance Kitchen, isang sikat na digital companion web series ng Top Chef.

Isa rin itong wildcard competition ng mga eliminated chefs ng current season, at ang winner dito ay makakabalik sa competition.

Si Rhoda ang nagwagi at muling nakapasok sa Top Chef Season 23.

Sa grand finals, ang four-course meal na inihanda ni Rhoda ay kinabibilangan ng sweet potato and uni, version niya ng congee o lugaw na sinangkapan niya ng abalone o sea snails.

Ani Rhoda, ang recipe congee ay “from my mom.”

Ang kanyang third course ay eggplant omelet, “which is like a first-food memory, and with crispy pork belly, and Chinese sausage, chili vinegar… we usually eat with it,” aniya sa interview niya sa YouTube channel na The Chef’s Cut, June 10, 2026.

Inilarawan naman niya ang kanyang ika-apat na meal bilang “braised short rib with liver sauce, that’s for my dad.”

Sa episode na iyon, binanggit ni Rhoda na ito ang version niya ng caldereta.

Ipinaliwanag ni Rhoda kung bakit napili niya ang Filipino cuisines bagama’t bihasa siya sa American cuisines.

“I went Filipino on this menu and it’s something I don’t really cook professionally, which, again, another sort of surprising element.

“I even surprised myself when I decided that I want to go in this direction. Because it is not something that I cook really much like this level.”

FROM ANTIPOLO TO AN ACCOMPLISHED CHEF IN THE U.S.

Isinilang at lumaki sa Antipolo, Rizal, si Rhoda.

Bata pa lamang, namulat at nakahiligan na niya ang pagluluto, na kalaunan ay magiging daan upang makapagtrabaho siya sa mga prestihiyosong food establishments sa U.S.

Bilang panganay sa anim na magkakapatid, araw-araw ipinagluluto ni Rhoda ang kanyang mga kapatid noon.

Natuto siyang magluto ng Filipino dishes dahil sa carinderia ng kanyang lola.

NOOD KA MUNA!

Nag-migrate siya sa U.S. noong siya ay 17-anyos.

Ang unang plano niya ay maging teacher. Subalit nangibabaw ang kanyang passion sa pagluluto.

Nag-enroll siya sa Le Cordon Bleu sa Pasadena, California.

Dahil sa kanyang pagpupursige, nagtrabaho siya at natuto sa Michelin-starred food establishments nina José Andrés, Josiah Citrin, at Suzanne Goin—mga respetadong chefs.

Si Rhoda ay naging executive chef ng tatlong kilalang hospitality locations sa Los Angeles: ang Chateau Marmont at Petit Ermitage na parehong nasa West Hollywood, at sa The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, Auberge Collection sa Los Olivos, California.

Kasalukuyan siyang executive chef ng CanoeHouse, isang prestigious restaurant sa Mauna Lani resort sa Hawaii.

Sa The Chef’s Cut interview, binanggit ng dalawang hosts na pareho ring respected chefs, na bukod sa winning Filipino dishes ni Rhoda sa grand finals ng Top Chef, may mga hints din ng Filipino flavors ang mga dishes niya sa TV show.

Nang tanungin kung may balak siyang magtayo ng Pinoy resto sa U.S., nasa “crossroads” daw siya pagdating sa topic na ito.

“Because making Filipino food in Top Chef finale could solidify my future as far as like what I’m gonna do in my career next, but to be honest still, I’m so incredibly insecure…

“There are so many chefs out there, Filipino chefs, they’re doing way cooler stuff with Filipino food, and just like really, really good at what they do.

“It’s something they researched and they really are very proficient in.”

Kung tatahakin daw ni Rhoda ang landas na ito, kailangan niyang aralin nang malalim ang tungkol sa pagkaing Pinoy, kasama na rito ang pagbabalik sa Pilipinas.

“I think it’s going to take a lot of work,” pag-amin niya.

Kaya sa ngayon, “I wanna keep doing what I’m doing I love cooking within the seasons.”

Sa buong karera raw niya ay nakasanayan niya ang pagluluto ng dishes na natutunan niya sa California.

Pero obvious na mataas ang tingin niya sa mga pagkaing may impluwensiya ng Filipino roots at proud siya sa kanyang pinagmulan.
