"I really don't want to consider it a race. Para sa akin, isa siyang commitment sa isang lifestyle," says Dingdong Dantes about his participation in the all-male relay category.

After months of training, Dingdong Dantes is ready for his first Ironman 70.3 triathlon event.

The Kapuso actor-TV host is joining the all-male relay category of Cobra Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship today, August 7, in Cebu.

He will do the biking leg for Team Gotta. His teammates are Gilbert Remulla (swimming) and Ige Lopez (running).

As a first-timer, Dingdong said he does not to consider the event as a race. Instead, he wants it to be part of his commitment to change his lifestyle

“Isa siyang commitment to a change of lifestyle na alam kong mae-enjoy ko hangga't kakayanin.

“Ang kalaban ko talaga dito is ang sarili ko, e.

“I wanna finish strong, safe, and happy.

“Bilang first time, gusto ko maging memorable naman 'to.

“At the same time, kahit papaano gumana naman yung mga natutunan ko, di ba?” he told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in a short interview before he checked in his bike yesterday, August 6, at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa.

FROM RUNNING TO BIKING. Prior to biking, Dingdong first got interested in running after a chat with TV personality and triathlete Kim Atienza.

“We were talking about things that interest us, napag-usapan yung fitness, yung love for family kasi buntis si Marian noon.

“Ano ba ang nangyayaring evolution sa mga lalaki, especially at this age—bagong kasal at may anak, ano ba ang transition stage niya?

“Hanggang sa nabigyang-diin talaga yung fitness, so na-mention niya to run with his group.

“Magmula noon, sumasama ako sa kanila.

“Yung vibe ng grupo, apparently, karamihan sa kanila ay mga triathletes, so naengganyo ako.”

After several training sessions with Kuya Kim and his teammates, Dingdong has also developed an interest in biking.

“Una, tumakbo lang kasama nila.

“Minsan halos every Sunday uma-attend kami ng mga fun run.

“Hanggang sa napag-uusapan na ang ibang mga bagay, like pagbibisikleta at pagsu-swim.

“Pero sabi ko, hinay-hinay lang muna, hanggang sa takbo na lang muna.

“Nagkataon na nagkaroon ako ng time para mag-bike, na-enjoy ko na siya.

“Ito, may opportunity to race sa Ironman, sa relay category, and I'm doing the bike leg.”

Dingdong said he never thought he would be part of a big sports event like Ironman.

“Kahit noong bata ako, naisip ko na isang dream para makasali sa isang ganito.

“Kasi, parang it's only for the elite athletes, talagang matitindi.

“Posible pala for someone like me who thought before na events like this were impossible back then.

“Basta may proper training, you know, you have the right coaches, you're with the right group, it's possible.

“In my case, akala ko hindi pupuwedeng mangyari, posbile pala.”

Asked if he will also do swimming in the future, Dingdong said, "Ayaw ko muna magsalita ng tapos.

"Gaya nga nung nag-run ako, sabi ko mag-uumpisa lang ako sa takbo and ito na ako, I'm doing the bike leg na never ko naman inakala.”

FOR MARIAN AND BABY ZIA. Dingdong said his wife, Marian Rivera, has been very supportive of his newfound passion for running and biking.

Unfortunately, the Kapuso actress could not join her husband in Cebu.

Because of this, Dingdong is dedicating his race today to his wife and their baby Zia.

“Siyempre, looking forward din ako umuwi para maipakita ko yung medal ko sa mag-ina ko, because I am offering this to them.

“One, kasi it will be Marian's birthday on the 12th.

“Sa lahat ng mga races ko, mga fun run, may pinag-aalayan ako.

“Ito, para kay Zia rin, so para kay Marian at kay Zia, kasi hindi naman ito madali, e.”

Dingdong added, “Kapag may ginawa kang something na may purpose or for someone else, kumbaga, for a greater purpose, mas nagkakaroon ng inspiration, nakakaengganyo.

“Nilu-look forward ko na matapos ko nang masaya, safe, at medyo malakas.

“Malakas, meaning na-maximize ko lang yung mga training ko.”
