As he turns 28 next month, Gerald Anderson said that his birthday wish is for him to complete his first 42-kilometer marathon in Los Angeles, California.
He remarked, “Sana huwag ako pulikatin. Please, God, yun na lang gift sa akin.”
The Kapamilya actor further shared that it was all perfect timing that his latest brand endorsement is the title sponsor of the Los Angeles marathon on March 17.
At the same time, his role in the upcoming ABS-CBN primetime series Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin is a triathlete.
But more than anything else, training hard for marathons and triathlons has so far given Gerald that extra boost to conquer the challenges and adventures that await him this 2017.
He elaborated, “Kahit nasa taping ako, kahit bakasyon ako abroad, I find time para tumakbo talaga.
“I am pushing myself hindi lang sa takbo pati in every aspect of my life.
“I just wanna show people hindi dahilan ang busy schedule para pabayaan ang sarili mo.
“If you’re very passionate about one thing in your life, it’s gonna spread in every thing you do.”
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) caught up with Gerald at the presscon for Skechers Performance at Dusit Thani Manila hotel last Tuesday, January 17.
WORKOUT ROUTINE. Add to his trainings for triathlons, Gerald said he's also been religious to doing his workout routine.
“Minsan kapag matatapos ng 2 a.m. sa taping, gigising ako ng 8 a.m. I’ll workout from 8:45 a.m. hanggang 10 a.m.
“Then after 10 a.m. workout, mag-swim ako for about 25 minutes. Then magba-bike ako before lunch.
“Kahit walang schedule [na engagement], I’ll rest for about one hour then go back to running. That’s every day sana, even kapag may taping.”
In fact, the Kapamilya actor was thrilled when his taping for Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin brought him to Subic.
On Instagram, he posted a short video of his rigorous workout coupled with behind-the-scenes footage from his upcoming soap.
Gerald related during the presscon, “That gave me a perfect training ground. Mag-swim ako kapag lunch break. Then tatakbo ako ng 10K.”
With regard to his diet, Gerald said that he just makes sure that he eats every thing in moderation.
“Hindi strict na diet, alalay lang, huwag naman sobra. Kasi pagdating sa rice, ang bigat ng pakiramdam mo.
“Nangyayari sa akin iyan—sa gitna ng race, nasa 3K pa lang ako, sabi ko sa sarili ko, ‘Sana hindi ko na kinain yung burger na yun.’
"Medyo mahirap yun.”
ON BEING NUMBER ONE. As it is, Gerald said that his goal is to be “number one.”
He explained, “You always want to be number one.
“Being number one doesn’t mean beating everyone else or being better than someone else. Being number one is to be the best that you can be.
“Ang dami ko natutunan na ganun… trying to beat somebody… at the end of the day, yung fulfillment wasn’t there.
“So, if you’re trying to be the best person that you can be, basta mas magaling ka than the person you were yesterday, that’s the goal, that’s the fulfilment."
Gerald added that trying to measure up to someone else’s standard is no good.
“Kalaban ko ang sarili ko talaga, e.
“If I see someone na ang bilis tumakbo, ‘Sige, sunod muna ako dito.’ Tapos mabilis ang oras niya. Kapag nandun ako sa likod niya, ibig sabihin mabilis ang oras ko.
“I’ve done that sa isang race, sumunod ako sa kanya. 'Tapos siguro, nung mga second kilometer na, sabi ko, ‘Oh my God, ang bilis pala nito.’
“Halos hindi ko matapos ang race kasi nga nawala na ako sa strategy ko.
“So I’m gonna pace myself. If I could go fast, then I will go fast, but hindi ko gagawin mga ginawa ko dati.”
Any advice for marathon beginners?
Gerald answered, "Get off the couch. Lumabas ka ng bahay niyo. Run or mag-walk muna.
"Everybody starts from zero. Lahat ng tao who have mastered their craft, kahit ano pang sport 'yan, everybody starts from zero."
