One thing you’d easily notice when you see Kris Aquino is her trim figure.
It’s quite evident from the flattering jersey dresses and curve-hugging jeans that she now favors after shedding off pounds last year.
So when PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) caught up with her recently, we took the chance to ask what triggered her weight loss.
The Queen of All Media revealed: health scare.
It can be recalled that in August 2015, she was rushed to the hospital because she had a "severe, vascular headache," vomited three times, and had "150/100" blood pressure (BP).
If she was not attended to right away, she could have suffered a stroke because her BP shot up to "200/110."
The cause, according to her Instagram post: she 'abused her body' because, "I was a slave to my work."
Resuming her recent interview, she said, "The truth was, kasi when I went to the States for my executive check-up nung December, natakot ako.
"Kasi one of the medicines is a beta blocker. 'Tapos nung ni-research ko si beta blocker, one of the side effects is weight gain, because it slows your pulse."
Kris further explained what she learned from her research: slow pulse means slower metabolism.
"Ang normal na pulse is about 70 beats. Mine is really just a 50 to 55. So ni-lessen ko talaga yung food intake.
"That’s a good thing about researching. Matatakot ka.
"Sabi ko, 'Oh my god! Tataba ako dahil dito sa gamot na ito.'
"So, I’ve been a lot more careful about what I eat.”
The 46-year-old TV host-actress also has another maintenance medicine which inadvertently affects her food intake.
She elaborated, "The one I have to take at night, ano siya, one of the side effects, nakaka-lessen ng appetite. Gusto mo malaman 'no?
"I’m worried about that. When I start shooting at night, dun ako natatakot. Kasi oh no, ang hirap mag-maintain."
Noting her previous bouts with high BP, Kris assured that she is now in the pink of condition.
"Super okay na my BP. Even pag pagod, even under stress, pinakamataas na 120 over 85. Dati nag-180 over 120 ako, grabe.
"Pero now talaga, thank you, Lord, naging okay."
With all her health concerns, Kris underlined that she really has to take good care of her self through proper diet and regular exercise.
"I think it also has a lot to do na in-obey ko lahat ng sinabi ng doctor.
"Secondly, naging mas active—naglalakad ako. I’m not allowed to do strenuous exercise because, the doctor said, it’s not beneficial for me.
"So, ang pinaka-okay lang is walking, elliptical."
Kris said she also plans to add swimming to her workout routine.
"Ngayon may pool na kami. Hindi ko pa siya na-try, but tignan natin kung matututo ako.
"Kasi sabi nung ano, the U.S. doctor, he emailed me and he said, ‘Did you start swimming?’
"Sabi ko, ‘Not yet.’ ‘I thought you were.’ Sabi ko, ‘OK.’ Hahaha! Yun lang sinagot, ‘OK.’
"Kasi maganda raw talaga ang swimming para sa BP."
