Professor Winnie Monsod earned PHP100,000 just from cleaning her home.

The COVID-19 pandemic gave the TV host-economist time to clean up her city home and discover all its nooks and crannies.

"I rediscovered that I could fix my house pala," the GMA News TV host told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and a select group of press during a Zoom interview on July 9, 2020.

Before the pandemic, Professor Winnie often resided in her house in Subic.

"It's a small house and I could put my hands on anything I want," she said of the Subic home.

Her home in the city was a different story.

"In here, I had kind of given it up to the maids, etc. so I had no idea where the things were."

Professor Winnie started her general cleaning session by decluttering her study room.

"Before, this place was a black hole. Iyong talagang full of papers, etc. All my shoes were out there.

"COVID allowed me to fix my study.

"I fixed my bathroom kasi iyong bathroom ko, iyong sink ko, hindi ko na nagagamit kasi punung-puno ng mga so many things.

"I fixed the faucet! My goodness.

"Alam mo, there are good things that happened to people who work like that. Alam niyo nung ako, aba, nakakita ako ng PHP10,000 sa isang lugar."

And that's not all.

Professor Winnie kept finding more money around the house.

"Nakakita ako ng 650 dollars nandodoon sa likod ng kuwan.

"That's not all! Kasi I'm fixing all, all, all my drawers. All! And then I found 25,000 pesos.

"The best, in my own drawer where I keep my underwear, I made halukat. I found a thousand dollars."

Fellow GMA News TV broadcasters Kara David and Susan Enriquez, who were also part of the Zoom interview, reacted.

In jest, Kara volunteered to be a housekeeper: "Maglilinis po ako diyan sa bahay niyo!"

Susan added, "Ang dami mo na-misplace na pera, Tita Winnie!"

The Bawal Pasaway host had no idea where the money came from, but Professor Winnie was happy to have the extra bucks.

"When I told my children about that, inggit na inggit sila. Sabi nila, 'Mommy, we should have done this before.'

"I said, 'If we had done this before, I will not have anything now.'"

Staying informed with the news

Professor Winnie Monsod, Kara David, and Susan Enriquez headline the new string of shows for GMA News TV's latest program, New Normal: The Survival Guide.

It is the first daily magazine program conceptualized with the "new normal" in mind.

During the Zoom interview, the three hosts underlined the importance of staying informed during these difficult times.

Professor Winnie said, "You have to watch the news. You have to [be] informed because how are you going to make decisions if you don't have the correct information?"

She will host the Monday program New Normal: Newsmakers.

"I think that's why they put me on Monday. You try to give as much information as you can.

"I'm not trying to convince them to do something. You're just giving them enough information, so that they can make a rational decision.

"If they don’t do that, if they just try to just hide themselves na parang nagka-cocoon sila o ostrich theory of self-preservation na if you don't know about it, it's not there? That's crazy.

"[Ignoring the news] is the one thing we should not do as Filipino people."

Susan, who will host New Normal: Pera Paraan for Wednesday, acknowledged how news today could get depressing.

But it can also be a reliable source for one's safety: "Mas kailangan nila manood ngayon, para to keep them informed doon sa mga totoong nangyayari sa paligid at ano iyong dapat gawin nila na pag-iingat.

"Especially sa panahon ngayon na ang dami nating nakikita na akala mo totoo, fake news pala. And then there are people who are sharing, so hindi siya nakakatulong in any way.

"Nagdepend ka doon sa mga nabasa mo sa social media, e, fake news pala."

Kara assured viewers that GMA-7 will properly curate its news content: "When you watch the news, makakasigurado ka, at least if it's GMA, makakasigurado ka na talagang na-curate itong mga balitang ito.

"Makakasigurado ka na meron mga strict gatekeeping principles na inapply iyong mga news producers to make sure na iyong lalabas lang na balita sa telebisyon ay totoo, balansiyado, at saka mapagkatitiwalaan talaga.

"Walang masama sa pagiging informed... Mas nakakatakot if you don't know anything kasi hindi nawawala ang problema kapag hindi mo siya alam, e. It's still there.

"It's better to have information than to be ignorant about the problems that the world is facing."

Kara will host the Tuesday program New Normal: Bright Side.

Rounding up the news program series are New Normal: Home Work, which Tonipet Gaba and Rovilson Fernandez will host every Thursday, and New Normal: Family Time, which Drew Arellano will host every Friday.
