This June 2016, YES! magazine takes you to New York City for an exclusive shoot and interview with Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach inside the Miss Universe apartment in Manhattan.
The 26-year-old Pinay-German stunner, who inspired the world with her never-say-die attitude and steely determination, gives us a tour of her modern apartment, which she shares with her BFF Miss USA Olivia Jordan, and talks candidly about her exciting new life in the Big Apple.
"I love the city!" Pia says during the house shoot for YES!
"There’s always something to do. I feel like one year won’t be enough, and this is what Lea Salonga actually told me: ‘I don’t think one year is going to be enough for you to experience or explore the whole city, because there really is so much going on and a lot of things happening. There’s so much to do and so much to see.’”
Aside from showing us her apartment, Pia also takes us to Central Park, Columbus Circle, and the Miss Universe Organization offices, where she gives us a peek of the Miss Universe closet and her enviable collection of shoes, dresses, and accessories.
Pia also shares her thoughts about HIV/AIDS awareness and cyberbullying.
“The thing about cyberbullying is that people don’t take it seriously,” Pia laments. “They take it seriously only when it starts happening to them.”
The dusky beauty also talks about her "friendship" with People Magazine’s Sexiest Doctor Alive, Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, whom Pia calls “Mike.”
Asked if Doc Mike has expressed his interest to do the traditional panliligaw, Pia tells YES!: “He has expressed interest. And I find it very flattering. But uhm, he’s very respectful of our culture in the Philippines. [He knows] that we’re very conservative, and that my priority right now is Miss Universe. It’s my job and that will always be my number one right now.”
YES! also had the chance to speak with Pia’s mentors at Aces & Queens, the 16-year-old training camp for aspiring beauty queens where Pia honed her skills in modeling, applying makeup, and public speaking.
Arnold Mercado, one of the pillars of A&Q, who is known in beauty-pageant circles as Mama Ruffa, tells YES! that Pia has what it takes to make it big in pageants: "Meron kasing girls na ang beauty, pang-beauty-pageant lang talaga, hindi puwedeng artista. Merong gano’n, e.
"Pero si Pia, puwede kahit saan. Puwedeng commercial model, cover girl, puwedeng host, artista, beauty queen.
"Ang lamang kasi ni Pia, puwede siya sa lahat ng titles [ng Binibining Pilipinas]. Kasi, di ba, may mga girls na ang peg e Universe, ’yong iba International. Si Pia, puwede sa lahat.”
Pia also shares with YES! her travel tips and advice for those traveling to New York for the first time!
Also in this issue is the traditional English wedding of model Georgina Wilson to Arthur Burnand in Winchester in England.
