GMA-7 actor Kevin Santos is only a few steps away from achieving his biggest dream: become a commercial plane pilot.

Were it not for quarantines made mandatory by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 32-year-old Kapuso talent would have finished his training and the required flying hours to become one.

But Kevin is willing to wait.

"Wala na akong hihilingin pang iba kapag na-achieve ko yun," he said in an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on Wednesday afternoon, September 2.

Aside from getting his license as a private pilot in 2018, Kevin considers finishing his college studies while actively working as an actor his greatest achievement.

Last August, Kevin proudly revealed on Instagram that he checked off another item in his bucket list: get his college diploma.

Currently, Kevin is working hard to get his license as a commercial plane pilot. Once he gets it, Kevin hopes to fly an aircraft with his parents, Obet and Emma Santos, as his passengers.

"And, of course, pinakagusto ko talaga is maisakay ko sila and ako yung piloto."

He cannot wish for more, Kevin adds, because he has already checked off almost everything on his wishlist.

LIFE CHALLENGES

Kevin did not achieve his dream without having to hurdle challenges and sacrifices.

Growing up in a humble family in Tondo, Manila, the Kapuso actor told PEP.ph that he would have been able to achieve his dream—to be a pilot—had he not sacrificed his studies to earn as an actor.

Inuna ko muna yung family ko, so I need to stop the schooling para lang makapag-provide.

"Kailangan kong mag-work, kailangan kong unahin yung family ko bago yung dream ko, so sinacrifice ko muna talaga siya."

Becoming a pilot was a dream from as far back as high school. But Kevin had to put that on hold to join Starstruck in 2004.

The actor says matter of factly, "Wala kasi kaming pera talaga, e. Mahirap talaga kami. Ang aviation kasi, hindi siya madaling pasukin.

"Kailangan mo ng money. And then, kailangan mo ng degree.

When he began earning as a celebrity, Kevin set aside his salary for his family, his education, and aviation school.

The challenges did not stop there.

Kevin kept to a frugal lifestyle when he started his aviation school in 2018, especially during a period when he did not have projects.

"Kumbaga dumadating sa point na, as in, wala talaga.

LIFE LESSONS

One important life lesson Kevin says he learned through the years is to grab every opportunity that comes his way.

Aside from this, one big thing he hopes the younger generation will also learn is not to rush success.

"Ang dami kasing mga kabataan, yung mga new generation kids or teens ngayon na parang ambilis nila sumuko," Kevin observes.

"I mean, parang gusto nila kasi madalian nila makuha ang isang bagay, which is wrong.

First, magiging strong ka.

"Na parang, 'My gosh, eto na yun, after ng mga sacrifices, after ng mga hirap na pinagdaanan mo...'

"So, ang advice ko, huwag kayo magmadali. Huwag kayo magmadaling abutin yung gusto niyo. Huwag niyong idaan sa shortcut. Kailangan step by step, one at a time."
