Longevity in show business is rarely kind. Stardom burns out. The star is made to reinvent herself. She finds herself reduced to token appearances. Finally, she confronts the inevitable fadeout.

Yet, there are artists like Sarah Asher Tua Geronimo—known simply by her first and last name—who have turned more than two decades of stardom, all 22 years of it, into something more certain than mere survival.

To the Filipino audience, she is a relentless powerhouse. She proves time and again that she is not just a top-tier singer, she is also an astounding dancer, box-office actress, beloved rom-com lead, TV darling, in-demand endorser, arena-filling star, dream client, and true triple threat.

But for all the ink that has been spilled on Sarah Geronimo—about the acclaim, the “Popstar Royalty” persona, and the fiercely protective Popsters' fandom—little has been said about her quiet evolution.

Beyond the carefully cultivated public persona lies a woman who is finally tending to her own becoming.

FINDING SARAH’S BLOOM

We meet Sarah on March 31, 2025, at the PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) office, far from the glitter of the concert stage. The conversation unfolds gently, in what feels less like an interview and more like a diary read out loud.

From the wide-eyed fourteen-year-old who won hearts with her voice to the seasoned thirty-six-year-old who commands stages and screens, the pop icon now navigates new inventory. She navigates the pressure of being in full bloom at all times.

“Oo, actually may pressure,” Sarah tells PEP with unexpected candor.

“Actually, ewan ko, parang sa lahat naman ng artist yata, we're parang expected to, you know, be always at our best. And sa lahat ng projects that we [do], the materials that we put out, ine-expect nila na talagang maganda.

“And, siyempre, we as artists, meron din hopes na parang it will be a hit and maraming makaka-appreciate.”

NOOD KA MUNA!

She pauses to reflect, her eyes softening, as if speaking not to the interviewers behind the voice recorder but to herself.

“But, you know, the reality is, kahit naman ang bulaklak, it won't be always in full bloom. It will take time. And siyempre, kailangan ninu-nurture, patience, di ba, na wait for it to really, to naturally, bloom.”

Explaining herself, Sarah says: “Mahirap kasi yung pupuwersahin mo. Ang audience kasi ngayon, they can really see pagka yung hindi authentic, and forced.

“So, although may pressure—I acknowledge na meron—pero, binibigyan ko rin ng, yung kumbaga, understanding yung sarili ko na, ‘Okay, maybe, hindi nag-work this time,’ then, okay lang yun, tuloy pa rin.

“Parang, particularly sa music ko, 'no? Yung love and yung passion for music, it should never change, yun lang. Mahirap kasi gumawa ng mga songs na talagang ang goal mo is for it to become a hit. You have to really love your own music.

“Para pagka pinerform mo or kinanta mo… Ako, kahit sabihin nila na ‘I don't like her music, I don't like her songs,’ ganyan, ‘Parang iba na,’ ganyan, even the choreography, if they don't like it—it's okay kasi it's part of my artistry.

Finding Balance Between Control And Freedom

As an artist, Sarah confesses to being a perfectionist—a default mode that keeps her striving constantly.

“Actually, mahirap nga, may binabasa nga ako na book, e. Dapat hindi daw maging perfectionist because talaga namang no one is perfect, nothing will ever be perfect,” she recalls.

At 36, she is at an age where questions about growth become more urgent and personal.

“Tinatanong ko lagi sa people around me, parang ‘Nag-grow na ba ako?’ Siyempre may pressure, ilang taon na ako. I’ll be 37 nitong darating na July,” she confesses.

She looks to her inner circle, which includes her husband Matteo Guidicelli, for honest feedback.

“I’m lucky,” she says. “May strong support system ako. Very supportive, pero diretso rin. Pag may mali, sinasabi nila.”

That she is in an environment where she can make mistakes is pivotal to her own evolution. She admits that, when left to her own thoughts, she sometimes cannot see her progress.

“Kung ako lang, feeling ko, hindi.”

But growth, Sarah reflects, is revealed in hindsight. Faced with situations today that overwhelmed her years ago, her more grounded, self-aware responses now tell the story of a woman who has been doing the inner work.

Asked to imagine her career as a plant—wild flower or cultivated plant?—Sarah hesitates before offering a thoughtful compromise.

“Siguro, if there's a middle ground. Sanay kasi ako na carefully cultivated. Pero ngayon, I'm learning to be more spontaneous.”

The balance between structure and surrender has been a defining shift in her personal and professional life.

For most of her career, she has followed a path carved out for her by management, by family, by public expectations: “Ito si Sarah Geronimo, public figure, ganito dapat, ito dapat.”

Only recently has she started to ask: What does she want?

“Ngayon ko lang nakikita yung actually discovering my true self—the good, the bad—and it will take time na talagang ma-accept everything about me and learn things about me na, ‘Ah, ganito pala ako, and all the adjustments that I need to do to become a better person.’”

She finds relief in this honesty even as she admits being discomfited by it.

“Mahirap po kasi, siyempre, 'Ay, ba't ganito ako? Bakit ganyan?' But, I'm sure a lot of us, parang we experience that, na parang 'Bakit ganito tayo?' Yung mga magaganda, mga di magaganda, we wish na hindi ganun, e, pero yun talaga. But, ang maganda naman, we acknowledge, and we're aware, na may mga kailangan ayusin, baguhin, about ourselves na hindi okay.”

Sarah says her slow embrace of spontaneity is partly influenced by her husband Matteo.

“Yung asawa ko naman, he’s very spontaneous,” she shares with a chuckle. “Ako? Nasa gitna lang.”

Gone are the days when every photo, performance, or public move had to be strictly controlled.

Today, there is more room for experimentation—and, yes, a little risk.

“Minsan napapa-react ako, ‘Shucks, bakit ba yun lumabas? Shucks, bakit ba ganito yung itsura ko diyan?’ But that’s okay.”

She is asked point-blank, “Kailan ka nagiging risk-taker?”

Sarah pauses before answering. Then she says she is not the type of risk-taker to skate on thin ice; rather, she is someone who makes her leaps of faith with intention.

“Sa tingin ko, ngayon,” she answers. “Sa mga projects na gagawin ko with my music and, hopefully, sa acting projects. Kasi nga, kaya hindi pa ako nakakagawa ulit ng pelikula, because gusto ko yung sana, challenged naman ako at mag-grow ako, mag-improve ako as an actor.”

This desire to grow as an actor, to take on roles that stretch her, proves she’s not interested in coasting. She wants to take risks.

IN THE MESS, SARAH FINDS GROWTH

Life gets messy. And for someone used to structure, Sarah admits the mess can rattle her.

She talks of her roots as context: “Well, lumaki kasi ako na other people are in control. Parang, kumbaga, uupo na lang ako, ngingiti, ide-deliver ko yung lines ko, magpo-pose. Pag-uwi ng bahay, relax na ako.

“Kumbaga, medyo robot nang konti,” she chuckles.

Marriage, she says candidly, shifted that axis. The neatly controlled existence fell away, replaced by chaos, self-confrontation, and, eventually, growth.

“But, hindi ganun ang buhay. Medyo, nung nag-asawa ko, dun ko nakita lahat, e. Oh my gosh! Sabi ko, ‘Grabe, ano, paano ba ‘to?’ But, alam mo yun, nangyayari lahat kasi may purpose. It's high time na makita ko 'to lahat, even the not-so-beautiful things na naririnig ko, that they say about me. And I acknowledge that. And I take it constructively. Kasi mapapaisip ka, ‘Ah, oo nga, no? Okay baka nga kailangang ayusin. In a way, parang, yun yata yung growth na sinasabi.”

She no longer avoids the mess. She lives in it. And perhaps, that’s the secret ingredient that gives her voice even more resonance today.

Sarah cracks up at the idea that she has completely grown, however.

“Hindi ko masasabi na, ‘Ay, grabe, ano na ako, nag-grow na ako.’ Kasi minsan, yung the old habits, how you react—very reactive kasi akong tao, e—nandoon pa rin yun.

"Pero, as time goes by, mas nagiging kalmado na ako. And, yung pag sinasabi na perfectionist, medyo natatanggap ko na yung realidad na ‘Ah wala, hindi, ito talaga, e.’ And, I can only improve myself. Pero, I will never be perfect.”

That acceptance hasn’t come easy. It’s taken years of self-awareness, inner battles, and learning to go slow on herself, especially in an industry that demands flawlessness at every turn.

“I have to be kind to myself. Mahirap yun gawin kung perfectionist ka. But, yeah, you have to do it. Wala kang choice.”

Finding Peace in the Process

Home was a retreat where she could unplug from the demands of her pop royalty crown. Yet even there, the silence that followed a performance left space for existential questions.

Instead of drawing strength from something as elusive as the crowd’s applause, she now operates on inspiration: “Nago-operate ako pagka-inspired talaga ako. And, hindi siya nangyayari all the time, yung inspiration.

“Kaya nga, we have to count our blessings. Totoo yun, e. Kasi, sabi nga ng asawa ko, minsan nasasanay na tayo sa mga lahat, di ba? All the good things, the beautiful things.

"But, kung titignan mo, ‘Uy, dati ganito wala ako nito, dati gustung-gusto ko, pero ngayon parang ayaw ko.’ So, parang yun, count your blessings.

“At tsaka ano po siya, hindi na siya yung parang, ‘I live for myself, I live for my family, I work for them.’

"Ngayon, parang mayroon nang bigger purpose why I'm doing this. Gusto ko nang maging worthwhile ang buhay ko dito sa mundo. Yung mayroon ng purpose why I'm here.”

She goes on: “Kasi, kine-question mo lagi, ‘Why am I here? Bakit ganito?’ Lalo na pag-overwhelming lahat, di ba? Parang ano bang purpose ko, bakit ako nandito?

“Iisipin mo lahat ng mga taong nai-inspire mo. And then, yun, sapat na sapat na yun. Kasi, may mga tao pa rin na napapasaya mo at nai-inspire mo. So, I guess, yun po yung purpose ko in life. I mean, why I'm still here in the business.”

For Popsters she holds dear, Sarah wants to serve dishes of comfort, sweetness, and spice through her music.

“Kasi, di ba, katulad natin, iba-iba naman yung the emotions that we go through, the situations that we deal with, lahat yun. And sana with my new music, ma-express ko lahat yun. Yun, excited ako dun. Excited.”

These days, her advocacy work also mirrors her personal values.

As an ambassador for The Generics Pharmacy (TGP), Sarah is proud to promote affordable medicine, especially for senior citizens, a group close to her heart.

“Soft spot ko talaga sila. Maka-lola kasi ako,” she shares, her voice softening. Gone are the days when she accepted endorsements indiscriminately.

“When I was younger, I would accept endorsements, left and right yan, for the sake of work. 'Oh, this is good money, this is for my family,' ganyan,” she recalls.

“But now, I have the freedom to pick the ones na pinaniniwalaan ko, na aligned sa values ko, and that's TGP. They're selling affordable and quality na medicines para sa mga tao, lalo na sa mga elders. So, yeah, masuwerte ako.”

The conversation between Sarah and PEP then turns introspective.

She is asked whether having more control earlier in life would’ve changed things. Her answer? “I guess.” But she’s not tethered to regrets. Instead, she acknowledges her past—and lets go.

“You cannot bring back the past. Kumbaga, ako din, parang may time na 'Bakit ganito? Sana ganito. Sana ganyan.'

"And if maggi-give in ka dun, parang mapupuno lang ng hatred or resentment yung puso mo. But, wala, e, mabigat sa dibdib.

"So, sabi nga nila, let go of the past and just move on, move forward. And dun ka mag-focus sa goals mo for the future.

"Yun, mahirap. Pero, yeah, yung sinasabi nilang trauma."

HOMEGROWN GRACE

When asked about the traditional pressure on women to choose between home or career, Sarah does not flinch.

“You don’t have to choose between being a homemaker and a career woman,” she says, grounded and sincere.

“Yung, well, mas open naman ngayon yung society. I mean, there are standards. Pag sinabi yung homemaker, dito ka lang, literally nasa bahay ka lang. Ikaw lang, nasa bahay ka lang, hindi ka nagwu-work.

"But iba naman ngayon, we celebrate a woman's strength na hindi lang as a homemaker, but also things that men can do. Kaya, nagagawa pa rin ng mga babae with flying colors.”

She adds, “For me, parang mahirap naman yung hindi ka magtatrabaho, nasa bahay ka lang.

"Nagtatrabaho ako, hindi lang para sa pamilya ko. Kundi gusto kong makatulong sa ibang tao. Ibang animals din. So, ganun.”

For Sarah, the domestic and the professional are no longer mutually exclusive. They intersect in her everyday life—in training pets with her husband, spending quiet moments napping with loved ones, and being fully present.

“I enjoy the simple moments that I spend with my loved ones. Yun lang.”

But behind this grace and calm is someone who has had to do the heavy inner work too.

If she could talk to herself from five years ago, she says she’d tell herself: “You're not perfect. And you will never be perfect.

"Di ba? Hard truth. So, kumalma ka na. Just focus on your strengths and work on your weaknesses.”

She knows what it’s like to hold herself too firmly. “Five years ago, oo, mas perfectionist ako,” she admits.

“Alam mo, may good, e. May good diyan. But yun nga, you have to find the balance. Kasi hindi pupuwede naman yung masyado ka naman mahigpit sa sarili mo o masyadong maluwag, mahirap din yun. So, balance lang.”

Lessons From Paws

Sarah’s love for animals is a full-hearted devotion.

“Grabe ang pagmamahal ko sa mga hayop,” she says tearfully, recalling how her pets have been silent teachers. “Sila yung talagang hindi ka iiwanan kahit na gaano ka ka-imperfect na tao.”

They’ve taught her about loyalty, patience, and most of all, unconditional love.

“Humans are conditional. Ako din, e. Pag may kasalanan ka sa akin, ayaw na kitang kausapin. Pero sila? Kahit mapagalitan mo, pag-uwi mo, iwe-welcome ka pa rin with open arms. Parang, ‘You’re home. I miss you.’”

Then she pauses and reflects on something deeper. “Sila nga, di ba, dog spelled backwards is God. Parang pinadala sila ng Diyos to remind us of His love.”

That connection between her pets and divinity isn’t just poetic license—it’s her truth. It’s also a quiet statement about how people sometimes miss the point.

“Tinuturuan din tayo ng mga animals, especially our pets, the value of time,” she adds.

“Tayo, we tend to take things for granted. Parang, ‘Okay lang yan, Mamaya na ako magre-reply.’"

Here, Sarah pauses and cries. Other thoughts may be passing through her mind that bring her to an emotional moment from the past. She asks for a tissue and keeps her tears to herself.

When she picks up the conversation again, she begins with: "Basta pets, they teach us important lessons in life."

After a few more moments, she adds: “Kasi nga pag tumatanda ka, parang andami mo ng fears, andami mo ng questions in life.

"Pero yun nga, that's why importante yun, talaga yung faith in God po, na God would remind me, trust in His plans.

“And yun nga, temporary lang yung buhay po sa mundo e, di ba? Hindi tayo, we're not, meant to stay here.

"Andami ko, andami ko pong questions in life. 'Bakit kaya tayo nandito? Bakit we experience sorrow, loss?'

“Yun kasing emptiness na yun, talaga, e, si Lord lang talaga. And us, as human beings, may tendency talaga tayo na hanapin natin, baka ito makapag-fill ng void.

"Pero yun nga, merong paraan si Lord na ire-remind ka na, ‘Ako lang. Ako lang talaga.’”

After everything she’s achieved—the fame, the fortune, the accolades—Sarah reveals that none of it could fill the void she sometimes felt.

Hence, her search for more purpose. “And even, you know, alam niyo yung simplicity ng buhay," she muses, "na parang after everything that I have acquired, all the material things, all the big amount of money... What truly matters [is the] relationship with our loved ones. Yun lang.”

Sarah Geronimo has come a long way from the girl who operated like clockwork, followed instructions to a T, smiled on cue, and waited for the director’s word.

She now writes her own lines, chooses her own projects, and lives for something bigger than the limelight.

She’s not perfect, and she no longer wants to be.

She is, instead, a woman who has learned that living means growing, and growing means allowing space for the good, the hard, and the healing.

Whether through music, advocacy, or a quiet moment in the kitchen, Sarah Geronimo continues to serve us her truest self, bit by bit, layer by layer, and always with heart.
