Seven years ago, Sam Pinto was introduced to surfing.
She would usually say in her interviews that it was the curious and energetic nature of her zodiac sign Sagittarius that made her try it.
But once she did, she was stoked.
At the recently held Dutdutan 17, she recounted, "I worked In La Union before, then may nagsabi sa akin na, 'Why don’t you try surfing?'
"Sabi ko, 'Game! Let’s try surfing.' Then I fell in love with that sport."
Since then, surfing has played a big role in helping Sam maintain her svelte body.
She walked the ramp for the biggest tattoo festival in the country on September 2.
She swears that it really is "nakakapayat."
The website www.mensfitness.com elaborated, "It's a huge upper back and shoulder workout. Once you’re riding a wave, your lower body, core, and shoulders take a beating.
"A wave hits the board with tons of force and your muscles instinctively contract.
"Factor in the instability of the water and your core muscles are getting a major workout."
The two-time winner of FHM 100 Sexiest Women title exclaimed, "Grabe yung surfing, kasi it’s a full-body workout.
"Andun ako for two hours under the sun."
Sam also exercises regularly, and has not found the need to subscribe to a specific diet.
As far as her food intake is concerned, the actress' simple rule is: "I don’t each so much, pero I eat often. Parang every two hours, nagugutom ako.
"So kakain ako ng kaunti then mamaya na naman."
MORE THAN GETTING STOKED. Aside from the rush and the workout she gets from the water sport, surfing has led Sam to launch her own swim wear line called Sirena last November 2015.
"Parang it was the most natural thing to do. I surf a lot so nasa beach ako parati. I love the beach.
"So one day naisip ko, 'Why not wear your own designs, di ba?'" she told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in a previous interview.
In April 2017, Sam opened a resort in Brgy. Reserva, Baler, Aurora—her favorite surfing spot.
She acquired the 3.5-hectare property in 2016, and turned it into a paradise with 10 deluxe rooms and five super-deluxe rooms.
Dubbed as L'Sirene Boutique Resort, it offers surfing lessons and gives guests a chance to see Sam in person.
She relates, "I'm always there lately.
"I was there two days ago.
"Kapag wala akong project like teleserye or movie, nag-stay ako dun for one week."
How hands-on is she?
“Super. Ako yung nag-design ng resort, like yung mga rooms.
"I bought all the toiletries, shampoo.
"Ako minsan ang nagpapalit ng mga bed sheets kasi I need to learn how to do it also."
The VIVA talent continued, "Surf season is just gonna start this month na, September.
"Kasi pag summer, medyo flat yung mga alon, pero this September, tataas na yung mga alon kaya panigurado marami na namang magpupunta sa resort ko.
"I’m so excited to go back surfing again."
In case you're not up to catching some waves, Sam assured, "In my resort, I just want you to relax, enjoy nature, the beach, and sleep.”
Sam was 20 years old when she fell in love with surfing, and just like a gift that keeps on giving, the sport made her a savvy entrepreneur.
Smiling, Sam concluded, "That's what happens when you love what you do."
