Everyone has their favorite ‘growing up’ memories—it can be as grand as a weeklong trip to the States and meeting Mickey Mouse for the first time or as simple as being allowed to go eat at the nearest fast food store with the barkada on a Saturday. For singer-songwriter, Moira dela Torre, her ‘growing up’ stories are synonymous with ‘independence’ and ‘hustle.’
Born in the quiet province of Olongapo, Moira’s beginnings were far from the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry. At a young age, Moira was compelled to try out different hats to earn her own money—from teaching English to Japanese students, helping her Lola check students’ test papers, to taking orders and busing tables at a friend’s restaurant where she invested—she had to be ingenious in her tactics so she sustain her daily needs.
“Back then, since I had to be independent earlier in my life. I didn’t have a lot of accessible solutions to financial problems that often seemed impossible to get out from.” Moira recalls. Nonetheless, she did manage to find her way around those roadblocks through that one thing she had always been passionate about—music.
Growing up in a family of religious and with a naturally mellow voice, Moira had always been fond of music. She had been singing church songs and Christmas carols since she can remember—and little did she know that the very first song she penned called “After Your Heart” would be the start of all chart-topping songs she would eventually have under her name.
But it was not an overnight thing. It took Moira almost a decade to reach where she is today—and it was a long, arduous journey laden with rejected auditions, callbacks that did not come through, and ‘almost’ victories.
“When I came to Manila, at first, it was just random gigs. And then I eventually became a vocal artist doing corporate jingles. People had started to become familiar with my voice but since there was no ‘name attachment’ to it, there was no ‘money attachment’ either,” Moira shares.
“For quite a while, I could not afford myself a new guitar or even a microwave—I was an aspiring musician in the city with a patched-up guitar who can’t even properly heat her food,” she shares, remembering her first months in the industry. “I can say that it was a rough start—but everyone has got to start somewhere somehow.”
On the very first season of The Voice Philippines in 2013, Moira took a big leap and joined the blind auditions. Her rendition of the hit song “Hallelujah” impressed the judges, and it was Filipino-American rapper Apl.De.Ap who gave her the ticket to move forward in the show. However, Moira’s journey in the said show didn’t last long after being eliminated in the second round.
Three years after, Moira’s song “Malaya” was topping the charts.
