“Family comes first.”
This is what Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup-Lee says despite being busy as a businesswoman, wife, mother, and the newly crowned national director of Miss Universe Philippines.
Even if she has a full schedule for the entire week, she makes sure to take care of her family when she is at home.
She explains, “I try to put myself in the position of my own mother. My mom was a working mother. Kahit na every day siyang wala sa bahay, when she’s home, she would be cooking, cleaning, and helps me with my school work.
“Sa kanya ko nakita na puwede naman pala ipagsabay ang pamilya at career. Just as long as may pina-prioritize ka. And that, for me, will always be my family.”
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) spoke to Shamcey on January 18 at the grand opening ceremony of Smilee Apparel, her new business venture with husband Lloyd Lee. The store is located at Reina Regente Street in Binondo, Manila.
DIVISION OF LABOR
Aside from Smilee Apparel, the couple is also busy with their Pedro 'N Coi chain of restaurants and Scott Burger by PNC, and divide their time to make sure they stay on top of their businesses.
Lloyd says, “Dito na ako sa garment business namin while Shamcey takes care of the restaurants. Mas gamay na ni Shamcey yung pakikipag-usap sa mga tauhan at suppliers namin. I will step in if she needs my help.
"So far, okey ang lahat. Wala kaming problema when it comes to communication. We're always talking and as much as possible, sabay kaming uuwi after a very long and hard day. It's nice to be with someone you love at the end of each day."
They are not worried about losing time for each other.
Shamcey says, "Kami naman ni Lloyd, we make it a point na every day is quality time day for us. Lagi naman kaming magkasama sa pag-asikaso ng business.
"Ngayon, he's more into the garment business in Manila at ako naman ang nag-iikot sa mga restaurant branches namin.
"We are always communicating naman. Like kelan ako matapos or what time kami magkita sa specific na lugar. Basta open ang communication lines namin parati."
FAMILY TIME IS SACRED
The entrepreneurial couple also makes sure they have time for their two children.
"When it comes to our kids naman, yung eldest naming si Nyke ang medyo ma-drama na. Sasabihin niya, 'If you love me, you should be here with me. Why do you have to work?' May mga gano'n na siya.
"But I always tell her na we love her and we are working for her and her brother Peanut [Peter Nathan Lee]. I try to make her understand that and I think naiintindihan naman niya," Shamcey tells PEP.ph.
Lloyd jokingly says that their kids miss their mother more than they miss him.
He narrates, "Mas attached ang panganay namin kay Shamcey. Tuwing tatanungin ko si Nyke if she misses daddy, she would answer, 'No, I miss mommy, I don't miss you!' Natatawa na lang ako. Kaya extra effort ako to be with the kids para kahit paano ay nami-miss din nila ako."
BALANCING HER PRIORITIES
Shamcey is also busy in her new position as Miss Universe Philippines national director.
She says, “Nagsisimula na kami. We’re currently accepting applications. Then we have deliberations with the team. It’s a job na hindi ko inasahan na darating sa akin.
“But of course, I consulted Lloyd about it and he told me to accept it as long as walang conflict."
According to Lloyd, he will always be supportive of his wife's endeavors.
"That's why we seldom fight because I'm an understanding husband and I know how much Shamcey values her career as much as our family.
"Like what she said, as long as walang conflict and she still has time for other things, walang problema sa akin.
"I know what she prioritizes and that's why I love her for being that kind of wife and mother," he proudly declares.
