Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan recalls her initial shock when her son Donny first told her about his wish to join showbiz: "Gusto kong himatayin. 'Saan mo nakuha iyan? Wala."

"Gusto kong himatayin!"

That was Maricel Laxa's reaction the first time his son Donny Pangilinan told her he wants to give showbiz a try.

At the media launch of Be A Wall Against Dengue awareness and prevention campaign of Sanofi last October 25, she told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), "Siya ang pinakamahiyain sa pamilya 'tapos one day sinabi, 'Gusto kong mag-artista.'"

Maricel asked him, "Saan mo nakuha iyan?

Wala.

"Sabi niya, parang, 'Mom, it’s in my blood!'"

They had an agreement.

Maricel continued, "Sabi ko, 'Mag-aral ka muna.'

"So pumayag naman siyang magtapos muna ng high school.

"And then, after, nag-ask siya ng one year to do things—travel, immersion, internship.

"Pero puwedeng showbiz."

The former actress revealed that Star Magic's top honcho Johnny Manahan, aka Mr. M, had long approached her.

"E, nililigawan ako nina Mr. M nang matagal. 'Sige, hihintayin namin hanggang mag-graduate ng high school.'

"So subukan natin.

"Pero pinasok na nila sa MYX, and he’s enjoying himself."

Indeed, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The same thing happened to her when she entered showbiz in the 90s. She had an almost-similar conversation with her mom, former actress Imelda Ilanan.

"Gano'n pala yun, ano?

“So, hindi pala maiiwasan.”

A MUST: DONNY TO FINISH COLLEGE. What if Donny will be swamped with projects?

Maricel stressed that his studies should not be sacrificed no matter what.

"Well, kasi in my case, hindi ako tumigil ng pag-aaral ko kahit ganung kadami yung ginagawa ko.

"Wala pang cellphone nun, computer.

"Kasi usapan yun with my mom. It took me six years.

"But I have a college degree, B.S. Behavioral Science, and I have a master’s degree in Family Life and Child Development, both from U.P.

NOT AFRAID FOR SON. When asked about her fears now that his eldest son with Anthony Pangilinan is part of showbiz, Maricel answered, "Wala naman akong kinatatakutan.

"This is my world."

Maricel's dad Tony Ferrer was an action star.

She resumed, "If there’s a world that I know, it’s showbiz na parang it’s a familiar world for me na kung siguro may isang industry na magagabayan ko siya nang todo, ito yun.
